
No. 7 Duke Defeats No. 54 ODU, 5-2, In Home Opener

DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 7 Blue Devils defeated No. 54 Old Dominion, 5-2, on Wednesday night in Duke's 2007 dual match home opener, held at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
Duke came out strong, sweeping the doubles point, winning all three matches. The duo of senior Peter Rodrigues and freshman Dylan Arnould finished first, defeating Eidy Igarashi and Aleksandr Seleznev, 8-4, at the No. 2 position. The fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the nation of senior Joey Atas and junior David Goulet then clinched the doubles point for the Blue Devils, defeating the No. 6-ranked duo of Henrique Cancado and Harel Srugo, 8-6, at No. 1.
Junior Ned Samuelson and sophomore Kiril Dimitrov then combined for a win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Rodrigo Souza and Takov Diskin, 8-6.
Playing at No. 5 singles, Goulet defeated Souza in straight sets (6-0, 6-1) to put Duke up 2-0. Rodrigues, the 80th-ranked player in the country, then fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) to seventh-ranked Srugo at the No. 1 slot, as Old Dominion got on the board, making the score 2-1.
Atas, ranked 100th in the country, then gave Duke a 3-1 advantage, as he defeated Diskin, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 3 position.
Freshman Aaron Carpenter clinched the victory for Duke with a 7-5, 6-3 victory at the No. 6 spot.
Arnould, ranked 84th in the nation, also claimed a singles win for the Blue Devils, defeating Seleznev in three sets (6-4, 0-6, 6-4), at the No. 4 position, while 54th-ranked Dimitrov lost a tough three-set match at the No. 2 slot to 18th-ranked Cancado, to make the final score 5-2 in Duke's favor.
“Tonight was a great way to start the season,” said Duke head coach Jay Lapidus. “Old Dominion is a very good team and for us to get through it, I am very proud of our guys.”
The Blue Devils are 1-0 on the season, while the Monarchs fall even at 1-1.
Duke's next match is set for Jan. 27 when the Blue Devils host 14th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth at 6 p.m. at the Sheffield Tennis Center.
