DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will open their 2007-08 season on Saturday at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion, as the Blue Devil women take on UNC Wilmington and Richmond and the Duke men go up against UNC Wilmington. The meet is set to begin at 2 p.m.

The Seahawks: The UNC Wilmington men's swimming and diving team went 6-4 overall in 2006-07 and claimed its sixth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association Championship. In 2006, the Blue Devil men defeated UNCW, 154-147, in Wilmington, N.C., on Oct. 21, and also competed against the Seahawks at the Patriot Invitational (Nov. 17-19), as UNCW placed second and Duke placed third.
The Seahawk women's swimming and diving squad compiled an overall record of 6-6 in 2006-07 and finished second at the CAA Championships behind William & Mary. The Duke women defeated UNCW, 164-117, last October, and also finished ahead of the Seahawks at the Patriot Invitational as the Blue Devils took second place and UNCW took third.
The Spiders: The Richmond swimming & diving squad finished the 2006-07 season with an overall record of 4-6 and went on to win its sixth straight Atlantic-10 Championship. The Duke women notched a 165-135 win over the Spiders in a tri-meet with Richmond and UNC Wilmington in Wilmington, N.C. in 2006 (Oct. 21).
2006-07 Season Highlights - Blue Devil Women: Opened the season with a 2-0 mark on the strength of sweeping a tri-meet with UNC-Wilmington and Richmond ... Split in a tri-meet with ACC opponents N.C. State and Maryland to start the conference season at 1-1 ... Took third place at the Patriot Invitational, competing against nine teams ... Took eighth place at the ACC Championships, two places higher than last year's finish ... Freshman Julie Brummond reached the finals at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships on both the one- and three-meter boards, as she placed 14th overall on day one, which is one of the best all-time performances at Duke ... Earlier in the season, Brummond broke a six-year-old record on the one-meter board by notching a score of 305.40 versus N.C. State and Maryland ... Three Blue Devil women were named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Swimming & Diving Team, as senior Jackie Rodriguez, junior Danielle Spearman and freshman Julie Brummond received league academic honors.
2006-07 Season Highlights - Blue Devil Men: Started the season off with a mark of 2-1, as the Blue Devils defeated UNC-Wilmington to open the season and split a tri-meet with ACC foes N.C. State and Maryland ... Freshman Andrew Clark became the first men's swimmer to garner ACC Player of the Week honors since 2000 (Oct. 24) ... Placed second out of 10 teams at the Patriot Invitational ... Took ninth place at the ACC Championships ... Sophomore Nick Campisano placed bested his own school record on the three-meter baord versus N.C. State and Maryland with a score of 345.75 ... Freshman Eric Winnard also beat Campisano's old school record in the same meet with a score of 343.15 ... Three Blue Devil men were named to the All-ACC Academic Men's Swimming & Diving Team, as senior Jacob McCafferty and freshmen Tim McKeever and Eric Ness received league academic honors.
A Look Ahead: Duke will head to Raleigh, N.C., on Oct. 26 to take on conference foe N.C. State and Campbell College in a double dual meet. Action is set to begin at 5 p.m. at N.C. State's Casey Natatorium.
