DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving squads will head down the road to Raleigh on Friday evening, as both squads will square off against ACC foe N.C. State and the women's team will also meet Campbell University. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. at N.C. State's Casey Natatorium.
Last Time Out: The Blue Devils opened their 2007-08 season with commanding victories last Saturday at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion in Durham, as the Duke men defeated UNC Wilmington, 187-109, and the Duke women defeated UNCW, 199-96, and Richmond, 190.5-93.5.
The Blue Devil men received victories from sophomores Andrew Clark (1000 free), Murillo Adrados (100 back) and Tim McKeever (200 back) and freshman Nick Garvy (100 fly), while freshmen Andy Osterland (200 free, 100 free) and Spencer Booth (200 fly, 500 free) were double-winners. Junior Nick Campisano picked up first-place finishes on both diving boards and the Duke 400 free relay team closed out a great day in the pool as Osterland, Garvy and sophomores David Hahn and Sean Smith touched in 3:10.17 for a top finish.
On the women's side, freshman Ashley Twichell shattered a Duke school record in the 1000 free by nearly seven seconds, finishing in 9:59.15 for a first-place finish in her first collegiate outing. Twichell also took first in the 200 free, while classmate Melissa Reynolds (500 free) was an event winner as well. Sophomore Shannon Beall (100 fly, 200 fly), freshman Jessica Perry (100 breast, 200 breast) and senior Danielle Spearman (100 back, 100 free) won two events each. On the diving boards, sophomore Julie Brummond dominated the competition, taking first place in both events, while Duke opened and closed the meet with relay victories.
A Look At The Wolfpack: The N.C. State men's swimming and diving team topped East Carolina (204-96) and William & Mary (234-64), last weekend in their season-opening meet as the Pack won 14 of 16 total events. The Wolfpack notched an overall record of 3-5 a year ago and went on to finish seventh at the 2007 ACC Championships. During the regular season, Duke fell to N.C. State by a score of 114-35.
The Wolfpack women's swimming and diving squad opened its 2007-08 season by splitting two contests against East Carolina and William & Mary last Saturday, as the Pack topped the Tribe (194-106), but fell to the Pirates (174-124). N.C. State finished 10th at the 2007 ACC Championships after compiling an overall record of 3-7 during the regular season. The Blue Devil women posted an 88-61 decision over the Wolfpack in the last meeting between the two squads (Nov. 4, 2006).
A Glance At The Fighting Camels: Campbell defeated Radford, 138-63, and topped VMI, 158-9, last weekend in its season-opener, as the Camel women began their fourth year as a swimming and diving program. The Camels finished the 2006-07 season with an overall record of 5-8 and placed seventh in the Northeast Conference.
A Look Ahead: Duke will return to the pool on Nov. 3, as the Blue Devils travel to College Park, Md., to face Maryland at 2 p.m. Following that meet, archrival North Carolina comes to Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion for an 11 a.m. contest with the Tar Heels.
