DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams will travel to Atlanta, Ga., this weekend for the Georgia Tech Invitational. The Blue Devil women are 5-1 (2-1 ACC) on the season, while the Duke men hold a ledger of 1-3 (0-3 ACC).
A Look At The Invitational Field: Duke is one of seven teams competing at the Georgia Invitational, which will run from Nov. 16-18 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. In addition to the host Yellow Jackets, the Blue Devils will go up against Florida State, N.C. State, Miami, Florida Atlantic and LSU.
The Blue Devils will face N.C. State for the second time this season, as the squads previously met on Oct. 26 with the Duke women coming away with a 156-141 victory and the Wolfpack men posting a 217-82 over the Blue Devils. The NCSU women are 2-2 (0-1 ACC) on the year, while the Pack men's squad is undefeated at 3-0 (1-0 ACC).
Duke faces three other conference foes at this weekend's invitational in Georgia Tech, Florida State and Miami. Both Yellow Jacket squads are 0-2 in league matchups this year, as the women are 4-4 overall and the men hold a mark of 1-4.
The Seminole women are unbeaten at 8-0 (4-0 ACC) and hold a national ranking of No. 21, while the FSU men are 6-1 (2-1 ACC) on the season and ranked 24th in the nation. Miami's women's squad is 6-1 (0-1 ACC) for 2007 and the Hurricane men are 5-1 (0-1 ACC) for the campaign.
LSU brings a nationally ranked men's program to Atlanta, as the 20th-ranked Tigers are 3-2 (2-1 SEC). The LSU women are 4-1 on the year, including a mark of 3-1 in SEC competition. The Florida Atlantic women's team ranks third in the country among Division I mid-majors, while the Owl men are 11th among mid-majors.

Last Time Out: The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving squads fell to rival North Carolina on Nov. 10 at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion, as the Blue Devil women were defeated, 178-115, and the Duke men fell, 177-113. The wins provided UNC with a pair of points in the 2007-08 Carlyle Cup race, which the Tar Heels now lead 6-1.5. The Carlyle Cup is an annual all-sports competition between Duke and North Carolina and is sponsored by Carlyle and Company.
On the women's side, freshman Ashley Twichell broke the pool record in the 1000 free event by touching in 9:57.45 for a first-place finish. Twichell also had a second-place showing in the 500 free event (4:52.62) for a Blue Devil season-best and NCAA 'B' cut, and teamed with senior Danielle Spearman, sophomore Shannon Beall and freshman Katie Magee to record a Duke season-best time of 3:30.45 for the 400 freestyle relay.
Spearman touched in 58.22 seconds to take top honors in the 100 back race and finished as the runner-up in the 200 back event with a time of 2:06.58, while sophomore Julie Brummond swept the diving events, posting scores of 279.97 to take first on the 1-meter board and 266.85 to finish at the top on the 3-meter board.
On the men's side, Duke swimmers took the top two spots in the 200 free event, as freshman Andy Osterland recorded a first-place showing (1:42.86) and sophomore Sean Smith touched in 1:43.39 for a second-place finish. Osterland also took top honors in the 100 free, finishing in 47.08 seconds, while Smith took third place in the 500 free race (4:42.65).
Duke closed out the meet with a one-two finish in the 400 freestyle relay, as the foursome of Smith, Osterland, freshman Spencer Booth and sophomore David Hahn finished in 3:08.82, and the group of sophomores Murillo Adrados, Eric Ness and Andrew Clark and junior Andy Ward touched in 3:15.26.
A Look Ahead: This weekend's invitational will close out the first portion of the season for the Duke swimming and diving squads. The Blue Devils will return to action on Jan. 12 as they travel to Davidson, N.C., to take on the Wildcats and South Carolina in a tri-meet.
