ATLANTA ? The Blue Devil swimming and diving squads were in action at the Georgia Tech Invitational on Friday, as the Duke women are in fourth place with 142 points and the Duke men sit in fifth place with 98 points after day one of competition.
On the women's side, seven swimmers qualified for the finals across three individual events, while four relay squads and two divers also scored for the Blue Devils.
Freshman Ashley Twichell touched in 4:56.06 to place second among 500 free preliminary competitors and advance to the finals, where she notched her second NCAA ?B' cut of the year in the event with a time of 4:53.93, good for a fifth-place finish. Twichell also holds a ?B' cut in the 200 free on the year.
Classmate Katie Magee took 13th place in the 500 free finals with a time of 5:03.61, while sophomore Jackie Fasano placed 15th with a mark of 5:05.91, as both scored for the Blue Devils.
Three Duke swimmers had point-producing performances in the 200 IM finals, as sophomore Shannon Beall placed seventh (2:07.72), senior Danielle Spearman took 11th (2:07.57) and freshman Jessica Perry came in 14th (2:09.34).
Freshman Emily Lang was in action in the 50 free finals after touching in a Duke season-best 24.48 seconds in the prelims, but did not score for the Blue Devils in finals action.
In the 1-meter diving event, sophomore Julie Brummond posted a score of 254.65 to place fifth and junior Lauren Gonzalez took 14th place with a mark of 204.15, as both scored for Duke.
The foursome of Spearman, Lang, Beall and freshman Kirstie Jeffrey notched a sixth-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:35.95, while senior Anna Rogers, junior Emily Kelly and sophomores Meredith Bannon and Emily McClintock combined for a time of 1:39.24 to take 10th place, as each team scored for the Blue Devils.
The 400 medley relay saw two Duke foursomes contribute to the team tally, as relay squads took fourth (3:51.24) and 10th (3:57.10).
Florida State is currently in first place with 330 points, while LSU (264) and Miami (144) round out the top three.
In men's competition, five Duke swimmers contributed to the team tally in individual events, while three relays and two divers also scored for the Blue Devils on day one.
Sophomore Andrew Clark set a Duke season best for the 500 free, as he finished in 4:38.25 to take ninth place in the finals. Classmate Sean Smith placed 14th with a time of 4:41.30 and freshman Andy Osterland finished 16th in 4:41.70, as all three scored for Duke.
Two Blue Devils were point-producers in the 200 IM finals, as sophomore Eric Ness touched in 1:55.96 to place 11th and senior Scott Champagne recorded a time of 1:57.50 to take 14th place.
Sophomores David Hahn and JD Coppel and freshman Nick Garvy were also in action in the 200 IM finals but did not score. Sophomore David Carlson took part in the 50 free finals after touching in 21.49 seconds in prelim action, but did not score.
Two Blue Devil divers contributed to the team tally on the 3-meter board, as sophomore Eric Winnard placed eighth with a score of 258.65 and junior Nick Campisano placed 10th with a mark of 258.50.
In relay action, Duke placed eighth and 11th in the 200 medley relay and eighth in the 400 medley relay for point-producing performances.
LSU is currently in first place with 303 points, while Florida State is close behind with 301 points and N.C. State is in third place (194 points).
Action at the Georgia Tech Invitational will continue on Saturday and conclude on Sunday at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
