EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. ? Senior Kellan McKeon, sophomore Voris Tejada and redshirt sophomore John Barone all placed in the top four on Saturday at the East Stroudsburg Open. Of the 14 Blue Devils that competed, 12 had winning records on the day.
McKeon was solid at 125 pounds in East Stroudsburg. The native of Chapel Hill, N.C., won his first three matches before losing in the semifinals to the eventual tournament champion. McKeon bounced back in the wrestlebacks with a 5-1 decision to take third place. He is now 7-3 this season through two tournaments.
At 149 pounds, redshirt sophomore Michael Degli Obizzi won his first three bouts until a close loss in the quarterfinals to the eventual title winner. Degli Obizzi's tournament would be finished as the consolation round was not completely wrestled through. His 2007 record now stands at 8-1.
Tejada placed in his third consecutive meet of the season on Saturday with a fourth-place finish at 157 pounds. The product of Marlton, N.J., swept through his first four matches before dropping close decisions in the semifinals and third-place match. Tejada is off to a 15-5 mark this year and his career .723 career winning percentage (34-13) currently ranks 14th all-time at Duke.
In the 184-pound division, Barone found success again, following up his title at the UNC Pembroke Open on Nov. 10 with a second-place showing in East Stroudsburg. Barone won his first five contests convincingly before falling in the championship match. He is now 5-1 this year and 45-17 overall as a Blue Devil, which is good for 13th place on Duke's all-time winning percentage list with a .725 clip.
Freshman A.J. Guardado (141 pounds), freshman Mike Bell (149), sophomore Jared Sernoffsky (157), redshirt sophomore Ben Wales (174), redshirt junior Turner Rooney (174), redshirt freshman Robert Holbrook (197), redshirt junior Dan Fox (197) and redshirt sophomore Wade Van Sickle (285) all wrestled to 2-1 marks on the day in their respective weight classes.
The Blue Devils next meet is the all day Indiana Duals in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 24. Duke will wrestle Oregon, Ohio, Indiana, Cumberland and Liberty from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. It will mark their fourth weekend of five in a row with meets, which concludes on Dec. 1 with the Davidson and Penn State Opens.
