DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving squads will head to College Park, Md., on Saturday to face ACC foe Maryland. The meet is set for a 2 p.m. start at Eppley Recreation Center.
Last Time Out: The Blue Devil women improved to 4-0 on the season with a 156-141 win over N.C. State and a 237-48 victory over Campbell last Friday, while the men fell even at 1-1 for the year after a 217-82 loss to N.C. State.
Freshman Ashley Twichell continues to impress as she won two events in last Friday's tri-meet (1650 free, 100 free). Twichell set a school record for the 1650 free with a time of 16:28.47, a mark that was 15 seconds better than the previous school record and also an NCAA ?B' cut. In the first 1000 yards of the event, she posted a time of 9:56.83, which was a N.C. State pool record and three seconds better than her own school record she set last week. Sophomore Shannon Beall also won two events (100 fly, 200 fly), while classmate Julie Brummond took first in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events. Senior Danielle Spearman was victorious in the 100 back, while freshman Jessica Perry notched a victory in the 100 breast. Freshman Emily Lang, Spearman, freshman Kirstie Jeffrey and Beall combined for a first-place time of 1:36.82 in the 200 free relay.
On the men's side, junior diver Nick Campisano came away with a victory on the 3-meter board with a score of 315.68, and placed second on the 1-meter board with an NCAA Zone-qualifying score of 316.58. Sophomore Eric Ness finished second in the 200 fly, while freshman Nick Garvy took second in the 100 fly. Smith also secured a second-place finish in the 500 free event.
A Look At The Terrapins: The Maryland women's squad brings a record of 1-0, following a 264-137 win over Johns Hopkins University last weekend. The Terps won 13 of 14 events to come away with the season-opening victory. In 2006, the Blue Devils suffered an 80-63 loss to Maryland in Durham, N.C.
The Terrapin men's squad also heads into Saturday's meet with a ledger of 1-0, as they defeated Johns Hopkins, 154-108, in last weekend's season-opener. The Blue Devils defeated Maryland, 168-131, in the last meeting between the two schools (2006, Durham, N.C.).
A Look Ahead: Duke will welcome rival North Carolina to Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion for an 11 a.m. contest on Nov. 10. Following that meet, the Blue Devils head to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational (Nov. 16-18).
