DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke wrestling team will send 14 wrestlers in nine weight classes to the Indiana Duals on Saturday in Bloomington, Ind. After four titles and 19 top-five finishers in the first three weekends of tournament competition, the Blue Devils will look to kick off their dual meet season on a positive note. The Indiana Duals is the fourth of five weekends in a row of meets for Duke.
Duke's first opponent will be Oregon at 10 a.m., followed by Ohio at 12 p.m. The Blue Devils will face off against host Indiana, which is ranked No. 17 nationally, at 2 p.m. The long day wraps up for Duke with Cumberland at 4 p.m. and Liberty at 6 p.m. There will be approximately 10-15 minutes between each match.
As usual, senior captain Kellan McKeon will represent Duke at 125 pounds. McKeon is 7-3 so far this season with one fall and a third-place finish at the East Stroudsburg Open on Nov. 17.
The Blue Devils will forfeit their 133-pound bouts.
Duke will utilize two 141-pound wrestlers in Bloomington. Sophomore Spencer Jasper is 6-4 in two meets this season with three falls and a second-place finish at The Citadel Open on Nov. 4 in Charleston, S.C. Jasper's career record at Duke is 18-14. Freshman A.J. Guardado is 7-5 in his first season with one pin.
Two 149-pound wrestlers will hit the mats on Saturday, led by redshirt sophomore Michael Degli Obizzi, who is 8-1 this year, including the 149-pound title at the UNC Pembroke Open on Nov. 10. Degli Obizzi now boasts a 30-23 record as a Blue Devil Freshman Mike Bell, who is 7-5 in 2007, may also start at 149 pounds.
At 157 pounds, sophomore Voris Tejada looks to continue his strong start after placing in the top five in all three of Duke's tournaments this season. Tejada is off to a 15-5 mark this year. His career .723 winning percentage (34-13) currently ranks 14th all-time at Duke.
Junior captain Addison Nuding and freshman Willy Mello will handle the responsibilities for the Blue Devils at 165 pounds. Nuding is 6-2 on the year with a second-place showing at Pembroke under his belt. Mello captured The Citadel Open on Nov. 4 and is 6-3 this year with two pins.
Redshirt sophomore Ben Wales and redshirt junior Turner Rooney will face the competition in Indiana for Duke at 174 pounds. Wales won The Citadel Open in his debut at 174 and now holds an 8-4 record there this season with one fall. His overall record at Duke is 17-15. Rooney placed second at the The Citadel, losing only to Wales at the meet, and has posted a 4-2 mark this year with one pin and an 18-14 all-time record.
One of Duke's strongest wrestlers at any weight is 184-pound redshirt sophomore John Barone, who swept through five matches in Pembroke on his way to the title and put up a 5-1 showing in East Stroudsburg on his way to being the runner-up. Barone is 10-1 in 2007 and 45-17 as a Blue Devil, which is good for 13th place on Duke's all-time winning percentage list with a .725 clip.
At 197 pounds, a pair of Duke wrestlers may start in the Blue Devils' five duals on Saturday. Redshirt junior Dan Fox is 6-4 in the early going this season with one pin and a 36-35 posting in his career. Redshirt freshman Robert Holbrook is 5-3 and earned a third-place finish at The Citadel Open.
Last but definitely not least at the heavyweight division will be redshirt sophomore Wade Van Sickle, who took second place at The Citadel and third place at UNC Pembroke and has a 10-3 record with one fall this season. Van Sickle is now 32-27 overall as a Blue Devil.
Next up for the Blue Devils all-day tournaments on Saturday, Dec. 1--- the Penn State Open in University Park, Pa., and the Davidson Open in Davidson, N.C. Duke will then take four weeks away from meets in December.
