CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Jackie Rodriguez placed seventh in the 200 breaststroke finals on the final day of action at the 2007 ACC Championships to help lift Duke to a eighth-place finish. The finish is two spots higher than last year's finish.
Rodriguez became the second Blue Devil woman to advance to finals, as she finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke preliminaries with a time of 2:17.40. That time was a Duke season-best and an NCAA “B” standard. Rodriguez touched in 2:17.52 in the finals to notch another “B” standard.
Freshman Meredith Bannon was in action in the 200 breast consolation final, as she finished in 2:20.58, and juniors Amy Brown and Alexa Namba were in action in the bonus finals, as Brown touched in 2:24.78 for a personal-best and Namba finished in 2:26.99.
Junior Danielle Spearman placed 14th in the 200 backstroke preliminaries with a personal-best time of 2:04.12 to qualify for the consolation finals, where she touched in 2:04.36. Those two times are Duke season-bests, as Spearman holds the top four times in that event.
Sophomore Erin Frizzell and freshman Elizabeth Bellew were in action in the 200 back bonus finals, as Frizzell recorded a time of 2:05.35 and Bellow touched in 2:12.30.
Freshman Shannon Beall competed in the 200 butterfly consolation finals and notched a time of 2:04.06 to notch a Duke season-best time. Classmate Caitlin Ariens also competed in the consolation finals and finished in 2:10.52.
The 400 freestyle relay team lifted Duke over Georgia Tech to take eighth place, as Spearman, sophomore Emily Kelly, senior Leslie Hartford and Beall touched in 3:29.52.
After going into day two of the championships in ninth place, the Duke women fell to 10th on day two then climbed back up to ninth by the end of day three. The Blue Devils ended the championships with a team point total of 150, good for eighth place. Host North Carolina led the entire way through the championships and captured the title with 737 points.
The 2007 ACC Men's Swimming Championships will be held on Feb. 21-24 at the University of North Carolina's Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, N.C.
