DURHAM, N.C. ? UNC Greensboro (9-4, 4-1 SoCon) got the better of Duke (7-9, 0-5 ACC), 30-13 on senior night in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Patrick Keenum, Daniel Shvartsman and Philip Wightman were honored in a ceremony before the final home match of their careers.
The meet started out on a positive note at 157 pounds for the Blue Devils as sophomore Addison Nuding recorded a pin of UNC Greensboro's Nate Berryman in the second period at 4:10 of their match. It was Nuding's first win since Jan. 20, as he was injured and only wrestled twice in the four week span in between.
165-pound redshirt sophomore Aaron Glover continued this season's success as he scored an 8-5 decision over the Spartans' Mark Ring. At that point of the meet, Duke held a 9-0 advantage. Glover finishes the regular season with an overall record of 18-12 and a dual meet mark of 11-4.
The idea of an upset began to look promising for the Blue Devils as they took the lead into the 174-pound match. However, their most consistent wrestler this year--- redshirt freshman John Barone--- was unable to extend the lead. Barone lost 17-8 in a major decision to Joe Lowe, who is an amazing 13-0 this season in dual meets.
That was the beginning of things going downhill fast for Duke. Including Barone's defeat, Duke lost seven straight matches. UNC Greensboro recorded four major decisions, one fall, one technical fall, and was within one point of making it five major decisions. Keenum and Wightman were unable to come up with victories in their last home matches of their careers. Duke's 9-0 lead turned into a 30-9 deficit.
The final match of the night turned out to be a highlight for the Blue Devils, as Shvartsman scored a major decision over Marcus Hannah, 16-8. Shvartsman finishes the regular season with a 12-7 record and a 9-3 showing in dual matches. He will have a chance in the ACC tournament to tie or surpass former Blue Devil Jake Cecere on the all-time Duke wins list. Shvartsman currently ranks tenth with 84 career victories and Cecere is in ninth place with 85.
The 30-13 defeat marked the sixth straight dual meet loss for the Blue Devils. Three of Duke's nine losses this season came by three points or less. Duke already finished the ACC portion of their schedule, in which they extended their ACC losing steak to 11 straight meets.
Duke will next compete in the ACC Tournament in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday, March 3 at 10 a.m. N.C. State is the host school and the meet will take place at Reynolds Coliseum. The Southern Conference will also hold their tournament there that day, and the event is being billed as the 2007 Mat Jam.
