DURHAM, N.C. ? The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today the recipients of the 2007 Winter Sportsmanship Awards. Teams receiving the awards have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league's players and coaches. Duke was given the award in wrestling.
The conference presents sportsmanship awards for each of its 25 sponsored sports. The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. As is stated in the conference's Mission Statement, “It [the ACC] strongly adheres to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship, and supports the total development of the student-athlete and each member institution's athletics department staff, with the intent of producing enlightened leadership for tomorrow.”
Duke's wrestling team, under the direction of head coach Clar Anderson, completed the 2006-2007 with a 7-9 record and an 0-5 ledger in the ACC. Highlights of the season included Konrad Dudziak winning the UNC Pembroke and Davidson Opens as a heavyweight, John Barone claiming The Citadel Open title at 174 pounds, and third-place finishes at the ACC Tournament by Barone and 149-pounder Daniel Shvartsman.
“While we strive for athletic excellence, as a team and a coaching staff we also stress academic excellence and great sportsmanship,” said Coach Anderson. “I'm very proud of our guys for this award, and it sets an example of how we conduct ourselves as a team--- one privileged to represent Duke University.”
