WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Duke women's tennis team began fall competition on Friday at the 15th Annual William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., as two Blue Devil doubles teams and freshman Reka Zsilinszka remain in main draw action at the completion of day one's festivities.
Zsilinszka, the No. 2 seed in Flight B, earned a spot in the semifinals by posted two commanding victories on the day, giving up just one game. Zsilinszka defeated Boston College's Lauren Cash, 6-0, 6-0, before recording a 6-1, 6-0 win over Lindsey Pereira of Virginia in the quarterfinals. The Fayetteville, N.C., native is set to face Mayori Franco of Arkansas on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. for a chance to compete in the Flight B finals.
Senior Tory Zawacki defeated Julia Huschke of Maryland, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round of the same bracket, before top-seeded Yulia Rivelis of Penn prevailed in a three-set quarterfinal battle, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5. Zawacki will face Viktoria Konstantinova of VCU in an extra match tomorrow at 1 p.m.
In singles Flight A action, sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin dominated Jennifer Stevens of Virginia, 6-0, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals where she fell to No. 2 seed Aurelija Miseviciute of Arkansas, 7-5, 6-0. Plotkin will face Charleen Haarhoff of Old Dominion on Saturday at 1 p.m. in an extra match.
In the same bracket, junior Melissa Mang and sophomore Amanda Granson both fell in the first round, as Mang was defeated by top-seeded Tatsiana Uvarova of VCU, 6-2, 6-3, and Granson fell to fourth-seeded Kellie Schmitt of Marshall, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Mang advanced to the semifinals of the consolation bracket by way of a withdrawal by Maryland's Michal Amir, and will meet her teammate (Granson) tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in semifinal action, as Granson defeated Pamela Duran of Richmond, 6-2, 6-3, in her first consolation match.
In Flight C action, junior Jessi Robinson fell to Princeton's Blakely Ashley in a hard-fought three-set battle, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2, but rebounded to post a 6-0, 6-0 win over Isabel Raich of Marshall in consolation action. Robinson will face back Maria Anisimova of Penn on Saturday at 2:45 p.m. in the semifinals of the back draw.
In doubles competition, the No. 2-seeded duo of Mang and Zsilinszka defeated Huschke Amir of Maryland, 8-4, in the Flight A bracket, and are set to face Maggie Yahner and Pereira of Virginia on Saturday at 9:15 a.m.
In the same bracket, Robinson and Granson fell to the fourth-seeded tandem of Ekaterina Kosminskaya and Julia Koulbitskaya of Penn, 8-4. The Blue Devil duo will face Valeriya Dandick and Alizee Paradis of Cincinnati on Saturday at 8 a.m. in back draw action.
In Flight B, Plotkin and Zawacki cruised to an 8-1 victory over Cincinnati's Jenny Rowen and Tess Reddin, and will square off against Lara Alexander and Hampton Williams of Virginia at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday.
The William & Mary Women's Tennis Invitational will run from Sept. 14-16. Results will be updated throughout the day and a final bracket will be posted at the conclusion of each day's matches at www.tribeathletics.com.
