DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men's and women's swimming teams posted a GPA of 3.369 over the past winter and spring semesters, a mark that ranked fifth in the nation, as was announced by College Swimming Coaches Association Of America.
The Blue Devil men's team produced a team GPA of 3.282, the 11th-highest mark among NCAA Division I men's squads. Georgetown had the highest total, as the Hoyas notched a 3.500. Dartmouth (3.400), Denver (3.394), Brown (3.390) and Harvard (3.337) round out the top five.
The Duke women's squad compiled a team GPA of 3.456, the 16th-highest mark among NCAA Division I women's teams. South Carolina recorded a mark of 3.606 for the highest total, while Iona College (3.580) and Vanderbilt (3.563) came in at No. 2 and 3, respectively. Butler (3.562) and ACC rival Virginia Tech (3.550) round out the top five.
Dartmouth took the top combined spot, as the Big Green squads posted a GPA of 3.450 on the strength of a No. 2 men's ranking (3.400 GPA) and a No. 9 women's ranking (3.500 GPA). Complete statistics regarding the Academic All-America teams are available at www.cscaa.org.
“This exemplifies the meaning of student-athlete and total team effort,” said Duke head coach Dan Colella. “We are proud of these young men and women for what they have achieved in the classroom and now we will continue our journey of athletic excellence.”
Duke begins its 2007-08 season at home on Oct. 20 as the Blue Devils take on UNC Wilmington and Richmond (women only) at 2 p.m. at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
