DURHAM, N.C. ? The Duke swimming and diving programs held their annual Blue/White meet Saturday afternoon at the Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion, with the blue team defeating white, 222-192 in the dual meet. However, the total for all competitions resulted in white coming out victorious, 352-334 after a week of team events.
“There were some great swims today, and I liked the way that people were racing ? definitely more aggressive than in years past,” said head coach Dan Colella. “It was a great opportunity to see everyone race and to assess things that we need to work on in the coming weeks as we prepare for the fall schedule.”
Colella was pleased to see big contributions from the freshmen in the dual meet, with Nathan French winning both the 500 and 100 freestyle, and Ben Tuben winning the 100 butterfly on the men's side. For the women, freshman Katharine Bodnar took first in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM while Steffi Niessl won the 50 free.
Several upperclassmen also had strong performances putting them ahead of where they were at this time last season, as junior Shannon Beall won the 100 fly and sophomore Pieter Den Hartog came in first in the 200 free.
Saturday's dual meet was run by the team captains.
The Blue Devil men are coming off a 3-7 (0-5 ACC) finish in 2007-08, and a ninth-place finish at the ACC Championships. The women were 8-4 (2-2 ACC) and took sixth at the conference meet.
The teams will officially kick off the 2008-09 season with a road meet at UNC-Wilmington on Sat., Oct. 18 at 2 p.m. The following weekend, the squads open the home slate as the men host Miami and the women host both Miami and Campbell at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
