DURHAM, N.C.?One week after opening the season with five victories at a pair of tournaments, the Duke University wrestling team hits the road for the Davidson Duals and the Virginia Tech Open on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16, respectively.
The Blue Devils will take on Davidson, Buffalo, and Campbell in Davidson, N.C. Action kicks off at 12 p.m., at the Baker Sports Complex. The following day, Duke will compete at the Hokie Open in Salem, Va. Duke defeated both Davidson and Campbell in duals last season.
Duke hits the mats after a successful opening weekend at the Citadel Open and Wolfpack Open. Five wrestlers brought home top honors over the course of the two tournaments. Junior John Barone and redshirt junior Konrad Dudziak came away from the Wolfpack Open as champions at 184 pounds and heavyweight, respectively.
Jared Sernoffsky and Dan Adamo both went unbeaten at the Citadel Open to come away with championships at 157 and 149 pounds, respectively. It was the first title for both athletes as they combined for a 9-0 start to the season.
The Blue Devils also turned in numerous other top performances. Mike Bell took runner-up honors behind Dan Adamo at 149 pounds, while Mike Tunick was the second-place finisher behind Dudziak at the Wolfpack Open. Rookie Peter Terrezza brought home a fourth-place finish at the Citadel Open with a 5-2 record. Freshman Jack Anderson climbed into the Duke records book with the sixth fastest fall in Blue Devils history at 19 seconds.
A selection of athletes wrestled unattached at the Citadel Open. Rookie Diego Bencomo captured his first title in a collegiate tournament, finishing 3-0 and beating the Citadel's Kelby Smith by fall in 2:58 in the championship match. Willy Mello posted a 4-1 record to finish third at 165 pounds.
Redshirt freshmen Vince Taweel and Anthony Jorge will see their first action of the season this weekend, while the rest of the Blue Devil lineup remains the same.
Duke continues its season the following weekend in just one event at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md.
