SALEM, Va.?Junior John Barone and redshirt junior Konrad Dudziak continued their outstanding starts to the 2008-09 wrestling season with two more championships at the Hokie Open hosted by Virginia Tech in Salem, Va. Barone captured the title at 184 pounds, while Dudziak won the event at heavyweight.
Overall, Duke picked up two victories, a third-place finish, and numerous other semifinal showings. It was Barone and Dudziak's second championship on the season after both garnered top honors in the Wolfpack Open last weekend.
Barone remained undefeated on the year, winning all four matches in the Hokie Open. He opened the Sunday tournament winning by fall in just 2:01 against unattached Tyler Brown. The native of Shirley, N.Y., won by technical fall and major decision in the next two rounds, respectively, to earn a spot in the championship dual. In the title tilt, Barone needed just 45 seconds to beat Mikal McKee of UNC Greensboro to win his second tournament victory of the season.
Dudziak turned in an equally impressive performance for the Blue Devils at heavyweight. He kicked off the day with a win by fall in 6:34 over Tarek Alaroui. Sporting a 6-0 record, Dudziak pushed through to the finals with a pair of convincing victories. He matched up against Virginia Tech's David Marone in the title match and won by major decision 10-2 to move to 9-0 on the year.
The Blue Devils received numerous other great performances at the Hokie Open. Jared Sernoffsky took third place at 157 pounds, while Diego Bencomo finished fourth as unattached. Sernoffsky fell in his second match of the day, but rebounded with a pair of victories four third place. He defeated Al Johnson of Virginia Tech by decision 4-2 in the third-place dual.
Rookie Jack Anderson turned in a great day to push through to the semifinals at 133 pounds, while Dan Adamo also earned a bid in the semifinal round at 149 pounds. Anderson registered two falls in his first two matches before falling to North Carolina's Jeremy Shaw in the semifinals. Addison Nuding and Voris Tejada both represented Duke well at 174 pounds as they wrestled their way to the semifinals.
Duke returns to action on Nov. 22, at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md.
