Upcoming Event: Women's Basketball versus Countdown to Craziness on October 3, 2025 at 7 p.m.

11/6/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Duke Head Coach Joanne P. McCallie
On Duke's overall performance against Anderson:
“I liked a lot of things we did tonight, I thought we got a lot better. I really liked the intensity that both halves provided; I didn't feel a let up of pressure or intensity, regardless of substitutions patterns or margin in the game or any other factor. That is very, very important to us right now, that we are prepared to get after it with intelligence and little bit of intensity without interruption so I thought the team did a great job doing that.”
On the improvements Duke has made in exhibition play:
“We are definitely better, the importance is getting better from the first time we play - to now and getting better until the next time we play. Without question our guards did a great job of driving the tempo and make pretty good decisions, not forcing it if it wasn't there and if it was there take it. The 24 assists would be a habit that we need to do repeatedly and that would be a very, very good thing for us.”
On the full court pressure:
“Well it is very important to get really, really good work out with everybody and play a lot of people and work on our depth tonight and we love to press this is very effective and smart pressing team. I think that you pick and choose your spots, but I like the intensity, I like the jump this team has when we are pressing.”
On Chante Black's ball handling and three-point shooting:
“We want to use every talent, every skill set, every bit of intensity that these women have, if you've got it use it, attack with it and it was neat to see Chante almost dunk it as well.”
On the competition tonight versus what is coming up next week:
“I think that is the discipline and the maturity of this team, we'll have a film session and it will show some things we need to work on. It's really all about us, you don't motivate for the opponent, you motivate for what we can offer and what we can do. This team has been really good about coming back in film, checking out a few things and moving forward and that is what we need to do for the next game. This is a process, it's a marathon, the season is very long so each game you want to get a little better, enjoy getting better and actually wanting to see film. I feel that is the mentality, I feel this is a low maintenance team, they listen and then they move on with it.”
What will be your biggest points of emphasis over the next eight 8 days:
“Improvement in all areas, on the film there will be execution problems on offense and being out of position on defense and no question our rebounding needs to be more dominant. We do have some rebounders, but 39 rebounds to 34, there are a lot of areas of improvement, maintaining defensive intensity, becoming better by position, games are going to become much more physical, much quicker and then growing everything else in the process.”
On the freshmen:
“I thought they gave us a great lift. Shay (Selby) is in attack mode a lot, so she is looking to attack, but I'm happy to see she picked up a charge because she was going hard to the basket and did some very good things. I think Chelsea was very calm, great demeanor for a point guard. We want some versatility with Chelsea to be able to come in a play the one and move Jasmine to the two, so I think she answered the bell and did a great job. Kathleen just worked hard, made some great plays defensively and looked for her three ball, which was good. It was nice to see one knocked down because she can shoot the ball. All three freshmen are ready, willing and able when her number is called to come in and do a little something. That is important”

Duke vs. Anderson Post Game Quotes
November 6, 2008 ? Cameron Indoor Stadium ? Durham, N.C.
Sophomore Jasmine Thomas
On her stat line on the night:
“That's what I'm trying to focus on, making myself better for my teammates; I need to focus on trying to set up other people. I'm just working on what I have to do to make the team better.”
On her development and defensive effort:
“As far as my development goes, we have great leaders on this team. I had great leaders last year. Everyone coming in, being new to the system, they were helpful in getting me used to college basketball. This year I still have Chante [Black], Carrem [Gay] and Abby [Waner] leading me, hitting shots, and helping me with the flow of the game. The defensive effort is something that we focus on as a team. Everyone was looking to be more aggressive, get into the passing lanes, and apply good ball pressure so that we could get into the passing lanes.”
Senior Abby Waner
On the team's performance and enthusiasm:
“Defensively, that's something that we take great pride in and we were executing on defense, which isn't something you hear that often associated with defense. There are some things that we can get better at, but if anyone was at the scrimmage against South Carolina last weekend, there was such a big difference. That really attests to the discipline and willingness to grow of this team. Before the game we said that we really wanted to focus on not fouling and not turning the ball over and we did both of those a lot better than we have around this time in previous years.”
On her shooting:
“When you shoot 17 shots, some of them are bound to go down. I mean I look at Jasmine [Thomas]'s assists; she's passing the ball so well right now. That's something that we've really worked on in practice, knowing where each other is and how to move together. She's doing a great job of finding Chante [Black] and I. She set me up for most of those open shots. It felt good to knock a few down.”
Senior Chante Black
On her ball handling skills:
“We do work on it every day in practice. Trying to become a complete player is what Duke and Coach P [Joanne P. McCallie]'s system is all about. Having the confidence to take a three pointer, to having the confidence to dribble is helping me become a complete player, so I give credit to Coach P [Joanne P. McCallie] and Coach [Al] Brown.”
On her attempted dunk:
“I was up there so I thought that I could try and put it back in. I ended up grabbing the rim while trying to go for the ball with my other hand. Coach [Al] Brown and I have been messing around in practice but I have yet to put one down. The confidence is growing, so soon I'll hopefully be able to put one down.”
