DURHAM, N.C.?The Duke University wrestling team opens the 2008-09 season this weekend in a pair of events. A selection of Blue Devils will make the trip to Charleston, S.C., for the Citadel Open, while another group is set to compete at the Wolfpack Open hosted by N.C. State.
It is the second year for the Wolfpack Open. Highlighting the competition are fifth-ranked Ohio State and 17th-ranked Maryland and as many as 50 individually ranked wrestlers also could be there. Also in attendance at the Wolfpack Open will be North Carolina, UNC Greensboro, Campbell, and George Mason. The Citadel Open will feature live video of the finals matches. The Blue Devils look to improve on their 12-9 record in 2007-08. Head Coach Clar Anderson welcomes back seven starters from a year ago and a talented group of freshmen. Also returning after taking a year off is senior Konrad Dudziak.
Freshmen and sophomores will wrestle at the Citadel Open. Rookies Nick Adamo and Peter Terrezza will line up for the Blue Devils at 125 pounds, while freshmen Jack Anderson will compete in the 133-pound spot. Classmate Chris Mullen will be the lone Duke wrestler at 141 pounds, while there will be three competing at 149 pounds. Sophomores Mike Bell and A.J. Guardado and redshirt freshman Dan Adamo all will open the year at 149 for Duke. Redshirt sophomore Jared Sernoffsky and redshirt freshman Colby Johnson round out the group at 157 pounds.
There will be a selection of freshmen who also will compete unattached. Willy Mello heads into the meet at 165 pounds, while Diego Bencomo is set to open the year at 184. Andrew Fulk will wrestle at heavyweight to complete the corps of unattached wrestlers.
The remaining Blue Devils will go up against a challenging field at the Wolfpack Open at N.C. State. Highlighting that field for Duke will be John Barone, who broke the single-season wins record in 2007-08 and Konrad Dudziak. Dudziak returns after taking a year off to train in hopes of earning an Olympic berth. Voris Tejada also will be tested after a strong sophomore season that saw him win 34 matches.
