DAVIDSON, N.C.?The Duke University wrestling team came away with six top four finishes today at the Davidson Open to take third of 24 teams. The Blue Devils captured one victory, two runner-up finishes, one third-place showing and two fourth place awards to compile 70 points. UNC Pembroke won the tournament with 79.5 points, while host Davidson took second with 75.5 points.
Junior John Barone highlighted the day with his fourth tournament title of the season. Seeded first at 184 pounds, Barone won three matches, two by major decision and one by technical fall, to remain perfect on the year. He kicked off the day with a 14-2 major decision victory over Limestone's Aaron Winemiller. He breezed past Jerami Bartley of Belmont 21-6 in 4:50 and dominated second-seeded Sam O'Hair in the championship match. Barone won by major decision 13-2 in the title tilt.
Competing for the first time this season, senior Aaron Glover was outstanding in earning a second-place finish at 165 pounds. Glover captured three wins in his debut. He was seeded second and won by decision 12-7 over Limestone's Mike Bush in the opening match and got past VMI's Vincent Gallo by decision 8-4 to move into the semifinals. He edged Davidson's Tyler Mullen by decision 3-2 for a spot in the title match. Glover fell to No. 1 seed Victor Hoilla by decision 6-4 in the final.
The second runner-up finish came courtesy of junior Voris Tejada at 174 pounds. Earning the No. 2 seed in the event, Tejada won by technical fall, 16-0 in 3:37, in his first match of the day and then edged Davidson's Kevin Cook narrowly 3-2 by decision to earn a berth in the championship match. In a hard-fought final competition, top-seeded J.J. Davis of Pembroke scraped past Tejada by decision 4-3.
Rookie Peter Terrezza was the Blue Devils' third-place winner. He opened the day with a win by technical fall 20-5 in 7:00, but lost the next match to the No. 4 seeded Angel Garcia. Terrezza rebounded from the setback and won his next four matches to take third place at 125 pounds. Breezing through three matches with three straight falls, Terrezza faced Garcia in a rematch in the third-place competition. Terrezza narrowly defeated Garcia this time, winning by decision 8-6.
In the 149-pound division, Mike Bell came away with fourth-place honors. Bell defeated second-seeded and teammate A.J. Guardado by major decision 13-4 to earn a spot in the third-place match. Ivan Lopouchanski of UNC Greensboro defeated Bell by decision 6-2 for third place. Guardado won three matches, which included a technical fall and fall, before losing to Dale DeBacco in the semifinal and set up the match with Bell.
Wrestling without top heavyweight Konrad Dudziak, Duke's Mike Tunick took over and came away with fourth-place. Tunick lost his opening match, but rebounded with four consecutive victories, including a fall, to advance to the third-place match before losing to Joe Kent of Belmont.
Also wrestling well for the day was Diego Bencomo as unattached. Bencomo advanced to the semifinals before falling to runner-up O'Hair by decision 6-1.
Fourth-seeded Turner Rooney also had a strong outing at 174 pounds for the Blue Devils. Rooney earned a spot in the semifinals with a pair of wins, including a fall, before falling to the eventual champion. Willy Mello went 4-2 on the day at 165 pounds falling to third-seeded Tyler Mullen to just miss earning a spot in the third-place match.
The Blue Devils return to the gym on Dec. 18 at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
