ATLANTA, Ga. - The Duke women's swimming & diving team began action at the 2008 ACC Championships on Wednesday evening at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center as the 200 medley relay team of senior Danielle Spearman, sophomores Meredith Bannon and Shannon Beall and freshman Emily Lang set a new school record.
The foursome bested the old Duke mark of 1:44.54 set in 2006 by Spearman, Nora Stupp, Katie Ness and Julia Lewis by more than 1.5 seconds to put the new school record at 1:42.98 and place sixth in the finals race.
In 800 freestyle relay action, the Blue Devil team of sophomore Jackie Fasano and freshmen Katie Magee, Jess Perry and Ashley Twichell placed seventh with a time of 7:28.73.
At the conclusion of day one Duke is tied for fifth in the standings with Miami with 50 points. Virginia is in first place with 70 points, while Florida State is second with 66 points and Virginia Tech sits in fourth place with 58 points.
Friday's championship events will begin at 11 a.m. with the 500 free prelims.
