ATLANTA ? The Duke women's swimming & diving squad came out strong on day two of the 2008 ACC Championships on Thursday, as the Blue Devils broke three school records and now sit in seventh place with 101 points.
Ashley Twichell finished second in the 500 freestyle finals with a school record-shattering mark of 4:45.18, as the freshman took down the 27-year-old record of 4:48.43 set in 1981 by Olympian Nancy Hogshead. Twichell's time was an NCAA "A" cut, which automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Championships. It will mark the first time Duke will have sent a swimmer to the NCAA Championships since 2004.
Two other Blue Devils turned in stellar performances in the 500 free finals, as freshman Katie Magee finished in 4:55.98 for a personal best and a 19th-place finish and sophomore Jackie Fasano touched in a personal-best 4:56.92 to take 20th place.
The 200 IM finals saw Shannon Beall notch an NCAA “B” cut with a time of 2:03.63, as the sophomore placed 13th. Senior Danielle Spearman (2:04.91 ? 18th place) and freshman Jess Perry (2:07.12 ? 22nd place) also competed in the 200 IM finals for Duke.
On the diving board, sophomore Julie Brummond placed 11th with a score of 241.30 for the 1-meter diving finals.
The final event of the night saw the Duke 200 freestyle relay squad of Spearman, Beall, sophomore Meredith Bannon and freshman Kirstie Jeffrey take seventh place in a school-record 1:33.20, besting the previous record of 1:35.86 set in 2006 by Spearman, Anna Rogers, Nora Stupp and Julia Lewis.
Spearman recorded a relay split of 23.45 seconds to set a school record of her own, topping the former Duke-best 50 freestyle mark of 23.60 set in 2001 by Lauren Cornet.
Day three of the ACC Championships resumes Friday with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals starting at 7 p.m.
