ATLANTA - The Duke women's swimming & diving squad took sixth place at the 2008 ACC Championships, as the Blue Devils set four new school records on the final day of competition.
Day four saw freshman Ashley Twichell take second place in the 1650 free finals, touching in 16:10.78 to best her own school-record mark of 16:28.47. The mark was Twichell's second NCAA "A" cut of the championships, as she also accomplished the feat for the 500 free. Twichell bested another school record, also set by herself (9:56.83), in the 1000 free as she recorded a split of 9:43.16 during the 1650 race.
Sophomore Jackie Fasano placed 14th in the mile race in a time of 16:57.44.
The third and fourth school records of the day came with the 400 free relay race, as senior Danielle Spearman swam a lead-off split of 51.30 seconds to set a 100 free Duke all-time best and the Blue Devil foursome of Spearman, Twichell, sophomore Shannon Beall and freshman Kirstie Jeffrey touched in 3:24.84 to break a school record. Duke took seventh in the relay to end the meet.
Spearman also took 10th place in the 200 back finals, as she finished in 2:01.70 and freshman Alessondra Spiedel placed 20th in 2:05.44.
Jeffrey took 21st in the 100 free finals in 51.84, and classmate Katie Magee placed 24th in 53.25 seconds.
Action in the 200 breast finals saw freshman Jess Perry place 13th in 2:21.24 while senior Amy Brown touched in 2:26.15 to place 20th.
Beall notched an NCAA "B" standard in the 200 fly finals with a mark of 2:02.38 as she placed 11th in the race. Classmate Elizabeth Bellew also placed in the finals, taking 20th in 2:06.66.
In platform diving action, sophomore Julie Brummond placed fourth with a score of 256.75.
The Blue Devils took sixth place at the championships with 267 points, two spots higher than their finish in 2007 when they tallied 150 points. Twichell garnered All-ACC honors in the 500 free and 1650 free, while Brummond was named all-conference for her performance on the three-meter board.
