DURHAM, N.C. ? Duke wrestling announced its team awards for the 2007-08 season, a year in which they tied a school record with 11 dual meet victories. Redshirt sophomore John Barone and senior Kellan McKeon shared Most Outstanding Wrestler, redshirt senior Bryan Gibson was awarded Most Outstanding Contribution, junior Addison Nuding was handed the Scholar-Athlete award, A.J. Guardado was the Most Outstanding Freshman and senior Dan Fox earned the Coaches' Award for the second straight year.
Barone's 35 wins at 184 pounds set a school record for victories in a season and his 11-second pin in November also set a new team standard. Barone currently is tied for 18th on the all-time Duke wins list with 70 and has the 10th-best career winning percentage at .745 (70-24). He was named to the NWCA All-Academic team and the All-ACC Academic team for his efforts in the classroom.
McKeon placed fourth at the ACC's at 125 pounds this year, and his 27 wins tie him for 15th place in the Duke records. He completes his Duke career with 62 wins, which rank 22nd all-time. McKeon also earned NWCA All-Academic and All-ACC Academic honors, and graduated from Duke with a degree in history.
Gibson had outstanding years as a freshman and sophomore, and was hampered by injuries in his final two seasons. He went 13-8 this year at 133 and 141 pounds with five pins and finishes his career ranked 14th on the all-time wins list with 76. Gibson's 34 victories in 2004-05 tie him for second in the Duke records.
Nuding is an international comparative studies major who had the highest GPA on the team in 2007-08. He was placed on the NWCA All-Academic team and the All-ACC Academic team. Nuding finished fourth at the ACC Championships at 165 pounds and his 29 wins this season tied him for 10th all-time at Duke.
Guardado wrestled to a 13-15 mark at 141 pounds in his first season in Durham. He pinned three opponents and had an 11-9 record in tournaments.
Fox earned his second Coaches' Award in as many years, even though his season ended early due to a concussion. He was a great contributor to the team even off the mat, and was 9-10 with two falls at 197 pounds before his wrestling season was cut short. Fox finishes his time at Duke with 39 career victories.
The Blue Devils will return seven of 10 starters for the 2008-09 season, losing only McKeon, Gibson and Fox to graduation.
