RALEIGH, N.C.?The Duke University wrestling team opened its Atlantic Coast Conference schedule in thrilling fashion with a 26-22 win over N.C. State at Reynolds Coliseum. The Blue Devils remain unbeaten in dual matches this season with a 5-0 mark.
The victory over the Wolfpack is the first ACC win for Duke since 2005, while it is the first time the Blue Devils beat N.C. State in 12 years.
“It was an exciting match, not a typical match where so many extra points were garnered for both teams from aggressive wrestling,” head coach Clar Anderson said. “I'm very pleased when you beat an ACC program. It's a confidence thing and I think our guys are gaining confidence. Learning to compete when they're injured and winning close matches is key, so hopefully they can gain from this victory.”
The match started at 125 pounds with Peter Terrezza going up against Mike Moreno. Terrezza gained a 2-0 lead early in the first round and added four more points with a pair of reversals to take a 6-5 lead after the opening three minutes.
The second period proved to be a different story as Moreno was able to register a takedown and pin Terrezza in 4:34 and put the Wolfpack up 6-0 after one match.
Wrestling at 133-pounds, Duke's Jack Anderson evened the team score, 6-6, pinning Daniel Brumfield in just 1:33. Anderson opened the match with a two-point takedown for the narrow lead and needed just 30 more seconds to register the pin. The victory was Anderson's sixth of the season and fifth fall of the year.
Spencer Jasper got the start for the Blue Devils at 141 pounds and lined up against 11th-ranked and unbeaten Joe Caramanica. Jasper battled hard in the opening period, but fell behind as Caramanica took a 5-0 lead after three minutes. Caramanica built his lead to 8-0 before pinning Jasper to give the Wolfpack a 12-6 lead in the match.
N.C. State built its lead to 18-6 with its second consecutive pin at 149 pounds. Third-ranked Darrion Caldwell maintained his undefeated record, using 2:02 to fall rookie Dan Adamo. The Closter, N.J. native, falls to 12-11 overall and 2-3 in dual matches.
The Wolfpack's Kody Hamrah added four more points to the team's score with a 10-1 decision over Jared Sernoffsky at 157 pounds. Sernoffsky trailed just 2-0 after the first period, but a big second session for Hamrah proved to be the difference as the Duke sophomore dropped just his third match of the season. He is now 11-3 overall on the season.
Duke senior Aaron Glover came back at 165 pounds and cut N.C. State's lead to 12 points with a 16-7 major decision over Quinton Godley. After falling behind 2-0 early in the first period, Glover registered a pair of takedowns and a one-point escape to take a 5-3 lead. He added a near fall towards the end of the three minutes and took a 7-4 advantage in the second period.
It was all Glover in the third period as he built his lead to 14-5 and cruised to the 16-7 major decision. The victory pushed the Gainseville, Ga., native's record to 12-5 overall and 2-0 in dual matches.
The match between junior Voris Tejada and Jake Burge at 174 pounds was a tight affair as the duo grappled to a 1-1 tie after three periods. Burge went in front 1-0 in the first period and Tejada answered with a one-point escape in the third period to tie the dual at one apiece. Neither wrestler was able to score in the first overtime, sending them into a pair of 30-second overtime sessions.
Tejada grabbed the lead for the first time in the match in the first 30 seconds with a one-point escape. Burge came back and nearly registered a two-point takedown, but Tejada held on for the overtime win to cut the lead to just nine points. Tejada is now 17-11 on the season and garnered his 70th career victory.
Looking to cut into N.C. State's lead some more, junior John Barone registered an 11-2 major decision over Mark Jahad to make it a 22-17 contest. Barone pushed his record to 26-5 on the year with a dominating performance. The native of Shirley, N.Y., raced out to a 6-1 lead after the opening three minutes and controlled the remainder of the match for the nine-point major decision.
A win by forfeit for Dan Tulley at 197 pounds gave the Blue Devils the lead for the first time of the evening, setting up a crucial match at heavyweight.
Fifth-ranked Konrad Dudziak went up against Bobby Isola to decide the match. Dudziak opened with a two-point takedown in the first period and added an escape in the second for a 3-1 lead after two periods.
It was a thrilling final period as Isola registered a one-point escape to pull within one, but Dudziak hung on to win 3-2 and give the Blue Devils the 26-22 victory.
The Blue Devils open their home schedule on Jan. 17, hosting Wyoming at 7 p.m., at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
