WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - In a school-record fourth straight overtime contest, the Duke women's soccer team came away with a 0-0 tie against ninth-ranked Wake Forest on Thursday evening at W. Dennie Spry Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Blue Devils moved to 4-4-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while the Demon Deacons are now 8-2-1, 0-1-1 in ACC play.
"I am just amazed with our team," said Duke Head Coach Robbie Church. "We have more people on the sidelines than we had subs to play tonight with eight players out. I cannot ask for anything else with the team. They are an amazing group of young ladies. They just work, work, work and work."
The first 45 minutes of action were very even as Duke held a 6-4 shot advantage and both goalkeepers combined for six saves. KayAnne Gummersall had two shots, while Gretchen Miller, Chelsea Canepa and Erin Koballa had one attempt each for the Blue Devils.
Wake Forest came out on the attack in the first three minutes of the second half as the Demon Deacons had a great cross in front of the goal that just missed two of the WFU offensive players. Then a minute later, the Demon Deacons had a excellent give-and-go where Jill Hutchinson got by a Duke defender and had a one-on-one chance with Blue Devil goalkeeper Tara Campbell. Hutchinson used her right foot and Campbell made a diving stop to knock the ball down and then crawled on the ground to grab the rebound.
The Blue Devils attempted their first shot of the second half seven minutes into the stanza as Canepa had a shot blocked followed by Duke's eighth attempt of the match off the foot of Miller that went just high.
Duke continued to put pressure on the Wake Forest defense as the Blue Devils fired six straight shots over the next 11 minutes before Hutchinson took the Demon Deacons seventh attempt of the match in the 66th minute.
Wake Forest then had run of play of its own with six consecutive shots but nothing got past the excellent Blue Devil defense.
At the end of regulation, Duke held a 15-13 advantage in shots.
Duke came out with the first shot of overtime as Canepa made a run down the left side of the field before using her right foot to fire a blast that was saved by WFU keeper Amanda Barasha. Junior Kendall Bradley then notched another attempt for the Blue Devils as she headed a cross that was blocked.
Wake Forest responded with three shots that were blocked, went high and then wide as the first overtime was coming to a close.
Both teams tried to make runs in the second overtime but nothing would progress into anything on the scoreboard. Senior Elisabeth Redmond fired a shot for Duke and Alisha Woodson had an attempt as well for the Demon Deacons.
"We would have loved to have the win tonight, but we have opened the ACC play at the No. 1 ranked team and then played the No. 9 ranked team in the country on the road as well," said Church. "We get a point tonight [in the ACC standings]. Both teams had some chances and it was a pretty even game. We want some wins and that is the only thing I would like to see because they need to be rewarded for all of their hard work."
Duke closed the match with a 18-17 lead in shots, while WFU led 5-2 in corner kicks. Campbell, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, notched four saves as she posted her third shutout of her career. Both Miller and Redmond each led Duke with four shots each.
"The defense was great tonight, but it is not just the back four who played well," said Church. "It is the midfielders who are defending, the forward who are defending and with Tara in the goal -- we are doing a really good job of team defending. Now we have to continue to work on the execution on the other side and be able to finish some things. It is the ACC -- there is not going to be a lot of goal scored."
The Blue Devils will next return home for two straight league contests against Maryland and Florida State. The Blue Devils will host 24th-ranked Maryland on Sunday, Oct. 4 at 2:00 p.m., and then host fifth-ranked Florida State on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m.
