DURHAM, N.C. –
Anthony Jorge is a junior wrestler who was one of the first freshmen to go through
Duke's ACTION program. He has since been an upper class mentor for the program for two years and is also active as the team representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Most recently, Anthony was asked to be the male student athlete representative at the upcoming (October 23-25th) NCAA Regional Student Athlete Development Leadership Conference in Atlanta.
Jorge sat down for a quick Q&A session…
What is your major?
Anthony Jorge: Psychology.
What are your future goals?
AJ: I'm not quite sure what I want to do with the rest of my life. I just know that I want to work with people and affect them in a positive way, either through ministry, coaching, education or as a doctor.
What is your favorite part of SAAC?
AJ: I enjoy actually feeling like I am a part of something bigger than just me or Duke and also being able to be make important decisions.
Why are you a mentor?
AJ: I am a mentor because I enjoy being able to help freshman athletes get adjusted to life here at Duke, to try and help them not make the same mistakes that I made, and no matter what people say about it I enjoy the hour or so we spend discussing topics we face. My favorite part of being a mentor is getting the chance to meet new people I may have never met.
Who is a person that has had a positive effect on you?
AJ: My father is the hardest working man I know. He was born in Cuba and came to America with nothing and had to work for everything he has. Also he has instilled in me values and morals that will be with me for the rest of my life, and for that I will always be grateful. I hope that one day I will have the same work ethic that he possesses and that I will be half the farther that he is.
Name five things you love to do.
AJ: Wrestling, being goofballs with my friends, watching TV/movies, fishing and playing just about any sport.
What is a symbol that represents you?
AJ: The cross would be the symbol that represents me the most. It represents what Jesus Christ sacrificed for me and how I am saved by His grace. Also, it represents how I try to live everyday of my life as Jesus did.
If you could spend an hour with anyone, who would it be?
AJ: I would want to spend an hour with Buvaysa Saytiev. He is a Russian wrestler and three time Olympic gold medalist. I would want to spend an hour with him because he is one of the most dominant wrestlers today and of all time. I would like to talk with him about his experiences with wrestling, what he did to get to where he is today and the type of training he did on the Russian national team. Also, he has one of the weirdest looking styles of wrestling and I would like to ask him how he came to wrestle like he does.
What has been your favorite part of Duke Athletics so far?
AJ: Well, not having been able to compete much due to injury, I would say my favorite part of Duke Athletics so far would have to be the one tournament I did get to compete in. It was at the Reno Tournament of Champions over winter break last year. Being able to compete at the college level was amazing and there is nothing like wrestling; it's what I love to do. Also just taking a trip with my teammates is a wild time. It was my first college competition and I was extremely nervous and excited at the same time.
