Senior John Barone garnered runner-up honors at 197 pounds, while redshirt freshman Diego Bencomo took third place in the 184-pound division. Redshirt freshman Andrew Fulk finished fifth at heavyweight for the Blue Devils. Three Duke wrestlers competing unattached also placed.
Jorge cruised through the 149-pound bracket, registering falls in the third round and the quarterfinal. After reaching the semifinal by pinning Nick Rex of Campbell in just 22 seconds, the native of Lakeland, Fla., shut down Brandon Bradley of UNC Pembroke 3-0 to earn a spot in the championship match. Going up against an unattached Joe Mavins, Jorge edged Mavins 5-3 in overtime to remain unbeaten on the year.
Moving up a weight class for the event, Barone had little trouble through the early rounds. He recorded three consecutive falls, needing just 6:03 to win three matches and take a spot in the final round. Barone took on Zak Bennett of North Carolina in the title tilt, but lost a tough 12-9 decision to take second place overall.
Coming off of a win of his own at The Citadel Open, Bencomo resumed his winning ways as he moved on to the quarterfinal with a fall and a technical fall. He edged Karl Reed of Newberry College by decision 6-5 to advance to the semifinal where he narrowly fell, 5-4, to Bryant Blanton of Newberry. In the wrestleback draw, Bencomo rebounded and added two more wins to his total for third-place honors. In the third-place match he edged Landon Hall of Limestone, 8-5.
Fulk captured his opening match, 6-0 over Rudy Joseph of Darton, but lost in the second round to Newberry College's Jake Elkins. Dropping down into the wrestleback bracket, Fulk rebounded in a big way, winning four of his next five matches for fifth place. He opened the draw by pinning Karim Mansour of UMBC. He cruised to the semifinal round before falling to Steven Butler, but bounced back to take fifth overall.
Lining up at 141 pounds, junior Mike Bell registered a fall in his opening bout before dropping a narrow 4-2 decision. His following three performances in the wrestleback draw were outstanding as he posted two major decisions and a fall to move into the quarterfinal round. Looking for a spot in the semifinal, Bell suffered a tough 8-5 setback to Dale DeBacco of Newberry to finish out his day.
Redshirt junior Jared Senoffsky turned in a strong day of competition at 174 pounds. After losing a second-round bout, he rebounded to win his next two contests by fall and major decision, respectively, and earn a place in the quarterfinal round of the wrestleback.
Competing unattached and placing on the day were Riley Adamson, David Henry, Bret Klopp. Adamson took sixth place overall at 141 pounds, while Henry captured the title at 165 pounds. Klopp completed the group with a fifth-place showing in the 174-pound division.
