DURHAM, N.C. – Both the Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams registered above a 3.0 grade-point average during the 2008-09 academic year earning a Scholar-Athlete team award by the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA).
In all, 347 teams representing 238 colleges and universities earned the distinction based on a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The Blue Devil women's squad featured a 3.53 overall grade-point average to rank fifth nationally, while the men's team posted a 3.03 average.
As a team, the Duke women finished out the year with a winning dual meeting record of 7-4 that was sparked by five straight wins at the outset. The Blue Devils collected ACC wins over Miami, N.C. State, and Maryland and broke 17 school records over the course of the year, including 12 individuals and five relay. Both Ashley Twichell (1650 free) and Abby Johnston (three meter board) won ACC titles, while both also advanced to the 2009 NCAA Championships. At the NCAA Championship, Twichell finished 23rd in the 1650 free and Johnston placed fifth on the three-meter board to earn All-America accolades.
The Blue Devil men closed with a winning dual meet record of 6-3, after notching ACC wins over Maryland and Clemson. Duke broke 18 school records on the year, including 13 individuals and five relays. At the 2009 ACC Championships, the Blue Devils finished seventh with 207 points, a two-spot jump from last season.
Earlier this week, Twichell and Johnston received CSCAA Academic All-America accolades, while Shannon Beall, Jessica Lyden, Julie Brummond, Lauren Gonzalez, David Carlson and Sean Smith were named Honorable Mention.
