DURHAM, N.C.-Duke University wrestling head coach Clar Anderson recently announced the addition of eight wrestlers to the 2009-10 squad. Anderson and the Blue Devils welcome student-athletes from four different states.
"I am excited about this class," head coach Clar Anderson said. "I believe that they can step right in and make a significant contribution to our team. All of them have had an outstanding high school career and I expect that this winning tradition will continue."
A talented group of athletes, the incoming class brings with it numerous All-America honors, national titles, state titles and overall impressive wrestling and academic resumes. The class features a pair of brothers and the younger brother of a current Duke wrestler. Joining Duke in the fall of 2009 are Dak Adamson (Riverton, Utah), Riley Adamson (Albuquerque, N.M.), David Henry (Dallas, Texas), Brent Jorge (Lakeland, Fla.), Brett Klopp (Lander, Wyo.), Robert Mello (Chesapeake, Va.), John Meyers (St. Davids, Pa.) and Christopher Piccolella (Millstone Township, N.J.).
Dak Adamson (Riverton, Utah/Bishop Lynch High School), 5-9, 160
A three-time All-America ... Two-time runner-up at the Greco-Roman Nationals ... Took third place in the Freestyle Nationals ... Selected to the FILA Cadet World Team ... Served as the team Captain for Bishop Lynch as a senior ... Captured two state titles overall ... Lost just five times in his scholastic career ... Posted a career-best record of 71-3 as a sophomore ... Captured the New Mexico State Championship as a freshman ... Went undefeated his freshman year and finished as the runner-up at Greco-Roman Nationals ... As a sophomore, captured the Texas State Championship and set the team pin record with 68 ... Placed third at the All-American Prep Nationals ... Took third in the Freestyle Nationals and earned a spot on the FILA Cadet World Team ... Finished first in the Cadet America vs. Russia Friendship Tournament ... Registered a 40-2 record his final two high school seasons despite suffering from injuries ... Earned a 4.0 cumulative grade point average ... staff and faculty Student of the Year in anatomy and physiology in 2008.
Riley Adamson (Albuquerque, N.M/Bishop Lynch High School), 5-8, 150
A two-time Prep National Champion ... Finished his scholastic career with a 216-18 record ... Captured three state titles and took third as a sophomore ... Won the Prep National Championship as a freshman and senior and took third as a junior ... Took fourth in the Reno Tournament of Champions in 2005 and third in 2006 ... Posted a fourth-place finish in the Ironman as a junior and took fourth in the Beast of the East as a freshman ... Was the runner-up at the Geary Invite as a senior and took third at the Dvorak Invite his junior season ... Academic All-State recognition as a senior ... Environmental Science Award of Excellence.
David Henry (Dallas, Texas/St. Mark's School of Texas), 5-8, 165
A four-year letterwinner for Rick Ortega at St. Mark's School of Texas ... Posted an impressive 81-4 record in his final two seasons ... A three-time prep state runner-up and all-area selection ... Earned All-America honors as a sophomore ... Ranked first in the state of Texas as a senior ... Was the prep state championship and finished as the prep national runner-up his senior season ... Earned photography excellence award as a junior and senior ... Named the top high school photographer in Texas by ATPI and one of the top 20 high school photographers in the nation by NFAA.
Brent Jorge (Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson High School), 5-9, 160
A four-year letterwinner for head coach Danny Walker at Lake Gibson ... Posted a 141-19 record for his prep career ... Finished third in the Florida state tournament as a senior 2009 ... A four-time first team all-county selection ... Earned district runner-up honors all four years and was the regional runner-up in 2009 ... Wrestled his way to second place in the state tournament as a sophomore and senior ... Posted a career-best 50-4 record as a senior ... Florida Boy's State Delegate ... US Marine Corps Athletic Excellence, Army Reserve Athletic Excellence.
Brett Klopp (Lander, Wyo./Lander Valley), 5-10, 175
A four-year letterwinner for head coach Nick Fulton ... Posted a 203-10 career record in scholastic competition, including going 116-0 in his final two years ... A two-time state champion and four-time conference and regional champion ... Captured top honors in Wyoming at 160 pounds as both a junior and senior ... Registered a total of 94 pins his final two years and 143 for his prep career ... Earned runner-up honors at the Wisconsin state championship at 140 pounds as a sophomore and took fifth his rookie season in Wisconsin ... Took seventh at senior nationals in 2009 ... Also competed in the Rocky Mountain Regionals in 2008, taking second in Greco Roman and first in freestyle ... Wyoming Jr. Duals member and helped his team go 10-1 in freestyle and Greco Roman in 2008 ... Also earned three letters in football and was all-state as a senior ... Took third in the state in the 100-meter dash, fourth in the 200, and third in the 4x100 relay ... Was a member of the National Honor Society.
Robert Mello (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge High School), 6-2, 205
A four-year letterwinner at Great Bridge ... Posted a 75-24 scholastic career record ... Went a career-best 35-5 as a senior ... Named the Most Valuable Player as a senior ... Earned runner-up honors in the state tournament and captured regional and district titles as a senior ... Played fifth in the region as a junior and was the runner-up in the district in 2008 ... A member of the National Honor Society.
John Meyers (St. Davids, Pa./Radnor High School), 5-8, 155
A four-year letterwinner at Radnor High School ... Finished with an 80-12 scholastic career record ... A three-time All-Pennsylvania Central League Conference, All-Pennsylvania Mainline and All-Pennsylvania Delaware County first team honoree ... Six-time Pennsylvania District I Championships Qualifier ... An AAU Middle Atlantic Junior Olympic All-American after placing second as a senior ... Captured the AAU Middle Atlantic Freestyle Championships title both his junior and senior seasons ... Selected to the Team Pennsylvania ASICS Junior National Team and AAU Middle Atlantic Junior Olympic Team as a junior ... Won the AAU Regional Freestyle Championship as a senior ...
