Duke falls to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in ACC action, while North Carolina improves to 3-4-1 on the year and 1-1 in the ACC. The win gives the Tar Heels one more point in the Carlyle Cup, pushing to the score to 6.5-2.5.
The match started at 133 pounds and North Carolina took an early 4-0 lead with a major decision from Jeremy Shaw over Duke's Nick Adamo.
Junior Mike Bell came out in the next match and registered the first win of the night for the Blue Devils, outlasting Ky Corley 5-4 at 141 pounds. The win gets Bell back on track and is his first dual match victory of the year.
With just a 4-3 lead, the Tar Heels rattled off three straight victories and 13 points to pull ahead 17-3 heading into the 174-pound bout. One of the wins for North Carolina came from third-ranked Thomas Scotton.
Scotton took on Duke freshman Christopher Piccolella. Wrestling in just his second career dual match, the rookie battled hard and held the Southern Scuffle champion to just a 12-4 major decision.
Tejada put the Blue Devils back on track with a narrow 4-3 decision over Thomas Ferguson at 174 pounds. The win was the 89th career victory for the Marlton, N.J. native, launching him into sole possession of the eighth spot on the Duke career wins list. He is 3-0 in dual matches and 2-0 against ACC foes.
Bencomo three more points to the total, posting his team-best 17th win of the year in thrilling fashion with a 6-4 overtime decision over Nick Tenpenny at 184 pounds. The Tar Heel registered one point for an escape in the final seconds of regulation to tie the match at 4-4. Bencomo, however, quickly rebounded in overtime with a takedown to remain unbeaten in dual matches and 2-0 against ACC competition.
The back-to-back wins from Tejada and Bencomo made it a 17-9 match with three contests remaining.
At 197 pounds it was the 12th-ranked Dennis Drury of North Carolina earning six points with a pin of senior 184-pounder John Barone. The Tar Heels' Ziad Haddad added three more points to their total with a hard-fought 10-3 decision over Duke's Andrew Fulk.
