DURHAM, N.C. – On Saturday, the Blue Devils returned to dual-meet action after a two month hiatus with competition against the University of South Carolina.
As was the case last season, the women showed strongly against the Gamecocks, soundly defeating them by a score of 176.5 to 123.5. The Duke women struggled against the South Carolina sprinters but the remainder of the meet was dominated by the Blue Devils.
Ashley Twichell and
Jackie Fasano went one-two in the 500 freestyle, separated by less than a second with times of 4:59.23 and 5:00.71, respectively. The pair also finished back-to-back in the 1650 freestyle, Twichell taking first and Fasano second. Twichell was just one of five Blue Devil women who recorded two first-place finishes on the afternoon. She was joined by freshmen
Cara Vogel (100 back, 200 back) and
Emily Barber (100 breast, 200 breast), sophomore
Abby Johnston (one-meter diving, three-meter diving), and senior
Shannon Beall (100 fly, 200 fly).
The Blue Devil men battled to outscore their South Carolina counterparts; however, they weren't able to break through against the Gamecock distance freestylers and butterflyers, coming up short 129-171. The freshman-senior duo of
Ben Hwang and
Sean Smith scored critical points in the sprint events, placing first and second in the 50 freestyle and first and third in the 100 freestyle.
Spencer Booth turned in a strong meet for Duke, taking first place in the 200 backstroke (1:50.97) and second place in the 100 backstroke (51.48). Senior
David Carlson picked up his first win of the season in an individual event, posting a time of 58.45 in the 100 breaststroke. The male divers did their part in the three-meter competition, sweeping first, second, and third places and for another week,
Nick McCrory remained unbeaten with first-place finishes on both the one- and three-meter boards.
The women are now 5-3 (2-3 ACC) on the season while the men fall to 3-3 (2-2 ACC).
Duke will return home to Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion on January 22 for a 5:00 p.m. matchup against Virginia.
