GoDuke.com: What drew you to come be an assistant coach here at Duke from Purdue?
Glen Lanham: Probably the move to first assistant. I was a third assistant at Purdue University and sooner or later I'd like to make that move to be a head coach and obviously this is the next step to be a first assistant. But also, I've known Clar forever. He was a former Cowboy and myself I was there, too, so I was there wrestling and Clar was a grad assistant working out and training. I really liked what he stood for so if I ever got the opportunity I talked to him about one day being an assistant for him so it just seemed to work out and he brought me back to Duke.
GoDuke.com: How would you describe the Duke wrestler?
Glen Lanham: Probably a Duke student athlete, they're really really really focused on the academics. Just the opportunity to talk to these guys a little bit. They're very up on world politics and they have their own really strong opinions. They're really mature, focused young men and what we're trying to do is get that athletic part out of them, too. They think a lot and analyze a lot and I think that's something I find a little different about those guys.
GoDuke.com: What is your contribution? You were big in recruiting at Purdue and that has been said to be one of your strong points. What do you like most about working with student athletes?
Glen Lanham: Being a mentor. I was fortunate enough to have some great coaches around me, my high school coach especially, Joe Uso (sp?). He was a second father to me. He sacrificed a lot of time and just kind of molded me into the person I wanted to be. You're spending weekdays with this guy, weekends too and at the end when I told him one day I'd like to be a college coach he said, 'listen, if you're not ready to be a counselor or a ride home or a mentor then coaching's not for you' and I knew right then that I wanted to be a coach. I think the experience with the student athlete and the mentoring process is great for me.
GoDuke.com: You were an assistant at North Carolina at one point. How does it feel to come back to the research triangle and now you're on the other side of the coin so to speak?
Glen Lanham: It feels great. [North] Carolina was a great experience for me there and I learned a lot and you know, people when I come back-and my neighbor runs a Duke lab and he's like 'welcome to the dark side.' So I mean, I enjoy it, I enjoy the rivalry between Carolina. We got to start beating those guys especially on the mat more to make it a rivalry. It's a rivalry for them but it's really not for us, we have to make it a rivalry, we gotta beat 'em. I wanna make it a rivalry with those guys, I wanna start beating them. It's good to be back and I'd love nothing more than to knock those guys down a little bit.
