DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving team will host the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m., in its season home opener at Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
The Blue Devils are coming off a good start to the season, after facing the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington last Saturday. Although the women fell to the Colonial Athletic Association foes, the team set four pool records at the Seahawk Natatorium.
Among those swimmers was freshman
Christine Wixted who placed first in all three of her first collegiate events and set two of the pool records in the women's 100 breast and the women's 200 IM.
Freshman
Hunter Knight also had a first place finish in the men's 200 breast, as well as sophomore
Ben Hwang who broke the pool record for the 50 free with a time of 20.37.
Maryland officially kicks off its season with a weekend of conference rivalry. The Terrapins will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face North Carolina State on Friday at 2 p.m. and will then travel to Durham to face the Blue Devils on Saturday.
The Maryland men are currently ranked 10th in the ACC standings, while the women stand in third.
"Maryland provides us with a great competition year in and year out, so we are looking forward to seeing how the team rises to the Terrapin challenge this coming weekend," said head coach
Dan Colella. "We match up quite well in most events which should provide for an exciting meet."
Duke faced Maryland last season in a duel meet with the N.C. State Wolfpack in College Park, Md. The men defeated the Terrapins in conference play 194-106, while the women lost by a narrow margin of 136.5-163.5.
The Blue Devils will continue interleague competition next Friday when they host North Carolina State on Oct. 29 at 5 p.m.
