CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke swimming and diving teams opened competition at the Nike Cup on Thursday in Chapel Hill, N.C. After the first day's events, the men stand in fourth place with 194 points, and the women hold third with 157.
Leading the Blue Devils in the opening event was the freshman team of Lauren Weaver, Christine Wixted, Tricia Leeson and Kelly Haggerty who placed fourth in the women's 200 freestyle relay. The Duke relay team of Ben Hwang, Nick Garvy, Ben Tuben and Spencer Booth placed second with a NCAA provisional cut of 1:20.38.
Freshman Christine Wixted, who was named to the ACC performer of the week in her first competition, grabbed a second place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.69. This was Wixted's fastest time to date, which also qualified her for the NCAA B cut.
Leading the Blue Devils into the closing events of the day was sophomore Ben Hwang, who grabbed a first place finish in the men's 50 yard freestyle with a time of 20.17, qualifying him for the NCAA B cut as well.
The Duke divers dominated competition, grabbing first place finishes on both the men's and women's side.
Junior Cody Kolodziejzyk picked up his first top finish of the season with a score of 337.90 on the one-meter board. Sophomore Jordan Long also finished in fourth, missing third by a mere four points.
On the women's side, sophomore diver Abby Johnston was untouchable for the day, finishing with a score of 751.50. Freshman Haley Ishimatsu made her invitational debut, finishing sixth on the three-meter board.
The Nike Cup will continue into the second round on Friday, beginning with swimming at 9:00 a.m., and diving at 11:00 a.m.
