CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Duke swimmers and divers ended competition in the Nike Cup, posting their best finish to date. The men held onto fourth with 442 points, while the women moved to second with a score of 503.
"I was extremely proud of our entire team," said Duke head coach Dan Colella. "We posted good times all weekend long."
Among the women posting big finishes for the day was senior Ashley Twichell, who placed first in the 1650 yard freestyle. Twichell also posted her second NCAA B cut of the season, her first coming from the 500 free.
Freshman standout Christine Wixted had another successful day, grabbing fourth in the 200 yard breaststroke, with a time of 2:14.32. In the preliminary round, Wixted broke the school record with a time of 2:13.71, while also securing her third NCAA B cut of the weekend.
"I am particularly proud of our freshman for really stepping up," said Colella. "I think this is a great indicator for things to come in the second half of the season."
For the men, sophomore Ben Hwang grabbed sixth in the 100 yard freestyle, while senior Nick Garvy grabbed eighth in the event.
The men closed the final event of the 400 yard freestyle relay in third. The team of Nick Garvy, Andy Osterland, Pieter Den Hartog and Ben Hwang posted their best season time of 3:00.99.
The Duke divers proved to be a threat again in the platform competition. Sophomore Nick McCrory debuted his national champion skills on the platform for the first time this season, grabbing first with a score of 434.55.
In her Duke debut on the platform, freshman Haley Ishimatsu grabbed second with a score of 261.50.
The Blue Devils will begin their winter season of competition on Saturday, January 15, when they host the Gamecocks of South Carolina at Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion at 1:00 p.m.
