CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The story of day two unfolded on the diving boards for the Blue Devils.
Sophomore and Upper Arlington, Ohio-native
Abby Johnston blew away her competition in the conference one-meter diving championship. Johnston posted a score of 358.25 which was not only her best score of the season but also a pool and championship record. The sophomore will add this conference title to the one she earned last year in the three-meter competition. This is the eighth conference title for the Duke women's swimming and diving program; Nancy Hogshead (4), Johnston (2),
Ashley Twichell (1), and
Katie Ness (1). Senior
Julie Brummond took 15th place with a score of 232.65.
Duke's male divers took the conference by storm in the three-meter contest as all three divers finished in the top six places. Freshman
Nick McCrory turned in a 453.05-performance en route to a second-place finish while fellow freshman
Jordan Long took fourth place with a score of 403.80. Sophomore and Canadian synchro champion
Cody Kolodziejzyk earned a sixth-place finish with a finals score of 377.50. His prelims score of 392.25 was his best of the season.
Meanwhile, the swimmers established three NCAA 'B' standards and, with the help of Johnston's first-place finish in diving, jumped into seventh place. Twichell got things off to a quick start, taking fifth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:45.80. Sitting in seventh after the 500 free prelims, Twichell dispatched Jenna Harris and Jen Narum of Virginia in the finals for the fifth-place finish. In what will be her last ACC Championships, senior
Jackie Fasano swam to an 18th-place finish in a time of 4:51.68. The time was good enough for an NCAA 'B' cut and a career-best in the event.
In an exceptionally fast 200 IM in which five swimmers went under the previous pool record, Duke's
Shannon Beall,
Haley Read, and
Elizabeth Bellew had their work cut out for them. The three responded impressively to the pressure in the finals. Beall swam a 2:01.83 to make an NCAA 'B' cut and take 13th place. Read and Bellew touched the wall just three-hundredths of a second apart in the finals. Read took 18th place in a time of 2:02.74 while Bellew took 19th in 2:02.77.
Competition resumes tomorrow with the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, men's one-meter diving, and women's three-meter diving.
GoDuke.com will also be updated at the end of each day of competition with results, standing, and meet highlights.
