"It's always nice on senior night and on the last match of the season to have a dominant win," head coach Clar Anderson said. "All of our wrestlers stepped up and competed well. This was a team that just dominated Duquesne so I was pleased with the effort."
John Barone, Konrad Dudziak, Robert Holbrook, Spencer Jasper, Voris Tejada, Chris Thumen and Ben Wales each were recognized prior to the match. Barone, Dudziak, Tejada and Wales all won their final career match in Cameron Indoor Stadium.
"Recognizing the seniors beforehand, it was incredible to see such an impressive group of young men," Anderson said. "All are looking to go onto graduate studies in everything from chemistry to medicine to law."
The match started at 125 pounds with Duke sophomore Peter Terrezza going up against March Rocha. Terrezza opened with a takedown just 10 seconds into the first period and continued to build his lead. He made it 6-1 with two near-fall points after getting Rocha on his back. Seconds later, the native of New Providence, N.J., and pinned Rocha for the early 6-0 lead for the Blue Devils.
Gardner-Webb cut the lead in half at 133 pounds as Brett Kostern earned a 9-4 decision over Duke's Nick Adamo. At 141 pounds, junior Mike Bell put the Blue Devils back in front by six, 9-3, with an 8-4 decision over Morgan McDaniel. Trailing 2-1 after the first period, Bell a five-point third period to outlast McDaniel and earn his 12th win of the season.
Lining up at 149 pounds was Jasper and Gardner-Webb's Ryan Medved. The Bulldogs garnered the early takedown and added two more takedowns for a 6-2 lead heading into the third period. Jasper took away much of Medved's riding time in the third period, but couldn't come back as he fell in a 7-2 decision.
Gardner-Webb grabbed the lead in the match after Alex Medved garnered a technical fall at 157 pounds in 5:01 to give the Bulldogs an 11-9 edge after five matches.
Wales put Duke back in front at 165 pounds, dominating Tim Burdine in a 17-7 major decision . Wales amassed five takedowns in the first period for a 10-4 lead after three minutes. Wales continued to control the bout and came away with four points in the major decision to put Duke back in front 13-11.
The Blue Devils stretched the lead to six points with a major decision from Tejada. After scoring a takedown in the first period to go in front 2-0 after three minutes, Tejada methodically worked his way to the 8-0 victory. The win pushes his career total to 94 and moves him into sole possession of the fifth spot.
At 184 pounds, Diego Bencomo made quick work of Jonathan Velazquez, earning the pin in 1:42. The win pushes his dual match record to 7-4 and his overall mark to 21-9 this season.
Barone continued Duke's dominance at the heavier weights, capturing a 13-2 major decision over Evan Rhodes. The Blue Devils' career record holder in wins used a seven-point first period to cruise to his 121st career win. He is now 15-7 on the year.
Saved for last was perhaps the best match of the evening as a pair of nationally-ranked heavyweights squared off. Ranked third overall, Dudziak and No. 12 Dustin Porter battled their way through a scoreless first period. Porter received a stalling warning in the first period that proved to be decisive in the end.
Starting the second period on bottom, Dudziak garnered the one-point escape for the 1-0 lead after five minutes of action. With Porter starting the third period down, he quickly evened the score with an escape.
As Dudziak continued to take his shots and defend Porter's attacks, the Blue Devil senior took a 2-1 lead off a second stalling warning on Porter. Dudziak continued to hold off Porter and remained unbeaten with a 2-1 win.
"Konrad was tested by the No. 12 wrestler, which turns out to be a good thing for him," Anderson said. "Now that he has wrestled that kind of competition, he has learned to how to wrestle that kind of close match and squeaking out the win."
The Blue Devils will have the next couple of weeks off before returning to action at the ACC Championship on March 6. The tournament will take place in Raleigh, N.C.
