Men Break School Record on Day 1 of ACCs

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The 2010 Men's ACC Swimming Championships got underway Wednesday with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays. The North Carolina men currently sit atop the standings with a total of 74 points. The Duke men are in seventh place after the conclusion of Day One; however, only four points separate the Blue Devils from fourth-place Virginia Tech.
The men couldn't have asked for a much better start to the conference championships. The 200 medley relay of David Hahn, David Carlson, Nick Garvy, and Ben Hwang obliterated the previous Duke record en route to a fifth-place finish and NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 1:27.99. Hwang closed out the race with a relay-aided split of 19.50 which was the fourth fastest in the heat.
The Blue Devils turned in another solid performance in the 800 freestyle relay. The quartet of Spencer Booth, Ted Minturn, Andy Osterland, and Sean Smith took eighth place in an NCAA 'B' standard time of 6:37.91. Booth took Duke out quickly, registering the team's fastest 200 freestyle time of the season and missing the school record by just under one half second. Smith, a senior, brought the relay home in a relay-aided 200 free split of 1:38.59.
Head coach Dan Colella said of the evening “I am really excited about the way the guys performed tonight and I'm looking forward to a great week of swimming.” And he will get to see what his men will do Thursday.
The action will get underway with the men's 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay. Duke's top seed in the 500 free is freshman Matt Carder who posted Duke's second-best time in the event this year with a 4:37.69. Carder will be joined by fellow freshman Alex Harmon with a seed time of 4:43.13. Both will be in search of a trip to the Thursday evening finals. A number of Duke swimmers are scheduled to swim the 200 IM including Spencer Booth, David Hahn, Alex Kluge, Eric Ness, and Jim Zuponeck. What will likely be the most entertaining event of the evening will be over in less than 25 seconds. The 50 freestyle will showcase Duke freshman Ben Hwang who is seeded ninth as well as Andy Osterland, Sean Smith, Murillo Adrados, Nick Garvy, Ben Tuben, David Carlson, and Jim Zuponeck.
