Columbus, OHIO – On Friday, freshman diver
Nick McCrory took his first NCAA Championship experience in stride, placing fourth on the one-meter board and earning All-America honors; but he was just getting warmed up.
On Saturday, it was McCrory's shot to compete on the three-meter board and compete he did. He got off to somewhat of a slow start in the preliminary round with a 405C (Inward 2.5 Somersault Tuck) that only went for 70.20 points; tenth in the round. But McCrory quickly got back on track with his second dive, a 205B (Back 2.5 Somersault Pike) that drew 8.0's, 8.5's, and a few 9.0's from the judges. He wrapped up the prelims with his 5337D (Reverse 1.5 Somersault 3.5 Twist Free), a dive which earned the highest marks of the round and pushed him into first place headed into the evening's finals session.
McCrory didn't necessarily stumble to open up the finals, the competition simply excelled. His first three dives of the finals ranked sixth, eighth, and sixth, respectively; but then the Chapel Hill native turned up the intensity and degree of difficulty. McCrory's final three dives were all second-best in their respective rounds including scores of 86.70 in his last two dives. Everyone was chasing Purdue's David Boudia, however, who ended up winning the event by 35.75 points.
McCrory, though just a freshman, became the national runner up in the three-meter competition, taking second place with a final score of 459.15 points. His finish is the best among any Duke swimmer or diver, male or female, in the history of the school.
