Following a split with Maryland in last weekend's season opener, junior Ben Hwang was named ACC Men's Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week, while sophomore Christine Wixted shared the accolade with North Carolina's Stephanie Peacock on the women's side.
Hwang led the Duke men to a 177.5-121.5 victory over Maryland last Saturday in College Park, Md., turning in first-place finishes in both the 50 free (19.84) and the 100 free (44.66). Hwang's 19.84 clocking the 50 free represents the nation's top performance in the event so far during the 2011-12 season, as well as an NCAA 'B' cut time. Hwang is also the only swimmer to have broken the 20-second barrier to date. In addition, Hwang's mark of 44.66 in the 100 free currently ranks as the eighth-best performance nationally.
In the win over the Terrapins, Hwang was also a key member of the Blue Devils' relay squads. The Cerritos, Calif., native anchored the winning 200 medley relay and led off the first-place 200 free relay with a 20.35 split.
Wixted was a double-winner in Duke's 111-186 loss to ACC opponent Maryland on Saturday. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native took first in the 100 breast at 1:02.26 and in the 200 breast with a 2:14.92 clocking. Wixted's marks in both events were good for NCAA 'B' cut standards. In addition, the Duke sophomore also swam the second leg of the Blue Devils' second-place 200 medley relay, posting a 28.52 split.
This marks the second time in her career Wixted has garnered ACC Performer of the Week honors after earning the distinction during her freshman season.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 when they travel to Christiansburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech, Florida State and UNC Wilmington. The meet will get underway at 12 p.m.
