After two full days of competition, the Duke women are in second place behind host North Carolina with 429 points. Meanwhile, the Blue Devil men have tallied 397.5 points to sit fourth in the field of eight squads.
Duke started off Friday evening's finals with an NCAA 'B' standard in the women's 200 medley relay. Freshman Megan McCarroll, sophomore Christine Wixted, senior Steffi Niessl and sophomore Lauren Weaver teamed up for a second-place performance in the event, clocking 1:42.03 for a season-best showing. Sophomore Steven Gasparini, graduate student Piotr Safronczyk, senior Ben Tuben and junior Ben Hwang followed suit in the men's 200 medley relay, besting 17 other relay teams to win the event in an NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:28.75.
Tuben recorded another win for the Blue Devils in the finals of the men's 100 fly. The Duke senior posted a season-best mark of 48.81 during Friday morning's prelims, and won the evening's championship final with a time of 48.84. Meanwhile, Dwyer earned a third-place finish in the final of the women's 200 free, swimming a personal-best 1:49.89.
After winning the women's 200 IM on day one, Wixted came back Friday to post another NCAA 'B' cut time in the 100 breast. The Greenwood Village, Colo., native took second in the championship final while breaking her own school record with a time of 1:00.97. In the men's 100 breast competition, Safronczyk also garnered an NCAA 'B' cut standard and a new school record with his 55.10 clocking to finish second overall. Sophomore Hunter Knight took third in the event in a personal-best 56.26.
Niessl took third in the finals of the women's 100 back, touching in a season-best 55.72, while Gasparini notched a season-best 50.04 to place fourth in the men's 100 back.
Duke's divers also saw action on Friday, with senior Jessica Lyden winning the women's three-meter competition. The Lexington, Ky., native surpassed the NCAA Zone Diving qualifying standard with a personal-best score of 362.60 to edge out the field of eight in the championship final. Fellow senior Cody Kolodziejzyk completed the Duke sweep with a first-place finish in the men's one-meter event. Kolodziejzyk earned a score of 363.80 for the Blue Devils' best performance in the event this season while also qualifying for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
In Friday evening's final event, the 800 free relay of Dwyer, junior Francesca Tocci, junior Cara Vogel and Wixted combined for a second-place finish at 7:26.56.
The Blue Devils will close out competition at the Nike Cup on Saturday, with preliminary events beginning at 10 a.m. in North Carolina's Koury Natatorium. The platform diving competition will be held at Duke's Taishoff Aquatic Pavilion.
