Cain, seeded third in the 149-pound bracket, posted a 4-0 mark en route to his first collegiate tournament title. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native posted consecutive falls in the second and third rounds before going up against the No. 2 seed Deral Brown of Newberry. Cain never let Brown score and registered a 4-0 victory to earn a spot in the title match. Against the top-seeded Pete Baldwin of Old Dominion, Cain outlasted the Monarch wrestler with a 4-1 decision to take home the crown. Cain is now 11-2 on the year and has a pair of top-two finishes.
At 197 pounds and seeded second, Hartmann also went 4-0 on his way to the tournament title. He kicked off the tournament with matching 10-4 decisions over Sheridan Rucker of East Carolina and Justin Tribble of Limestone. Hartmann continued to impress in the semifinal round as he picked up a 4-1 decision over the No. 3 seed Zach Anderson. Similar to Cain, Hartmann took out the top seed in the championship bout. The Port Orchard, Wash., native held off Shane Nolan of UNC Pembroke, 3-1, for his first title at Duke.
Hough headed into the 141-pound division with the No. 2 seed overall and promptly disposed of each opponent to advance to the championship match. He needed just 30 seconds to pin his first foe in the second round and then cruised to a 13-1 major decision over Limestone's Taylor Wickett in the semifinal. In the championship, Hough battled hard eventually falling 6-2 to the No. 1 seed B.J. Young of Newbury.
Adamson earned the No. 4 seed in the 174-pound bracket and advanced to the championship before falling to No. 2 seed Quinton Godley of NC State. Adamson breezed to the title bout with two major decisions and a first-period pin. He carried that momentum into the final, fighting in a narrow 8-3 setback to Godley.
Also competing were Andrew DeHart at 157 pounds, Dan Adamo at 165 pounds, Ethan Ruby in the 174-pound bracket, Dylan Ryan at 184 pounds and Michael Chapman at heavyweight.
DeHart lost his opening match before battling back to earn a place in the consolation final. The rookie registered three falls, all within the first period, to get a chance against the No. 2 seed Taylor Knapp. The Newberry wrestler proved to be too much for DeHart, handing the Duke rookie his second loss of the season.
