Gambucci Places at Keystone Classic to Lead Duke

PHILADELPHIA - Duke University redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci earned his third top-four finish in as many weeks, placing fourth at the Keystone Classic at the Palestra Sunday. Gambucci previously took second at the Hokie Open and fourth at the Wolfpack Open.
Three other Blue Devil wrestlers advanced to the consolation quarterfinals and finished 10th with 33 team points. Northwestern won the meet with 140 points.
Gambucci, seeded third overall in the 133-pound bracket, finished the day with a 3-2 record to take fourth overall. The Mansfield, Ohio native cruised to the championship semifinal round with a first-period fall his opening match and outlasted No. 6 seed Chris Johnson of Appalachian State in the second round. Up against second-seeded and 20th-ranked Steven Keith of Harvard in the semifinals, Gambucci went toe-to-toe with Keith in a narrow 8-6 setback.
The Duke rookie came back and beat Vinny Fava in the consolation semifinal by major decision before falling to Northwestern's Jameson Oster in the third-place bout.
Others advancing to the consolation quarterfinal brackets were Peter Terrezza at 125 pounds, Ryan Harding from 157 pounds and Randy Roden at 174.
Terrezza moved into the second round before falling to No. 3 seed Thomas Williams. The redshirt junior came back and won consecutive matches, including one in a technical fall, before losing to Tony Gravely of Appalachian State in the consolation quarterfinal.
After losing his first match of the day, Harding came back with three straight wins. In his third consolation match, Harding pinned No. 7 seed Carry Joseph of VMI to move into the quarterfinal round. Sixth-seeded James Brundage ended Harding's run with a pin in 2:56.
Roden rounded out the Duke entries at 174 pounds. The freshman lost his first bout and then bounced back with two victories, including an overtime thriller to earn a spot in the quarterfinal. He had his run ended by Ricky McDonald of Brown in a narrow 6-2 setback.
The Blue Devils compete again in the Nittany Lion Open December 4.
