ATHENS, GA. - The Duke divers opened the 2011 Zone Diving Championships on Thursday, passing four divers on to the NCAA Championships.
The men opened competition on the one-meter board, placing three Blue Devils in the finals. After a slow start in the preliminaries, sophomore Nick McCrory managed to grab fifth place with a score of 711.65. In an outstanding rise from last year's 18th place finish, junior Cody Kolodziejzyk improved to ninth with a score of 656.55, accumulating nearly 90 points more than his 2010 finish. Also making the cut was sophomore Jordan Long who grabbed the 18th and final spot. Long missed the cut by just 1.05 points last year.
The women's side held no surprises as junior Abby Johnston picked up her third-consecutive first place finish on the three-meter springboard. Having never been beaten on the three-meter in Zones, Johnston accumulated an impressive 756.75 points, putting a safe 79 point difference between her and her second-place competitor from Auburn.
Friday's
competition opens with the women's one-meter event and the men on the
three-meter boards.
