Garvy Ends Career With Two New School Records

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Duke swimmer Nick Garvy closed out his collegiate career on Friday in the NCAAs, with a record-breaking performance in the 100 fly.
Garvy went into Friday's competition knowing it would be the last time he dawned the Duke uniform. With a mid-range entry time, Garvy was one of eight swimmers in the third heat. He kicked off to a swift lead in the first length with a high nine, then progressively slowed into the next two lengths, waiting to push into his final turn. The senior from Naperville, Ill., finished 23rd overall, with a Duke school record of 46.85. Garvy broke his own record in the 100 fly, previously set just three weeks ago in the 2011 ACC Championships, where he posted a time of 46.94.
"It's just a great feeling," said Garvy. "Breaking both records, and doing it in my last meet, it really had more meaning. It makes me nostaligic, but it's a good feeling. I came in this morning with mixed emotions about competing for the last time. It's been a great experience and I don't think I will forget it."
In the closing event of the evening, Duke diver Nick McCrory pushed through a tough final round on the three-meter springboards, and managed to take fourth. The Chapel Hill, N.C. native was holding onto a solid second place in the preliminary round, the place in which he finished in the 2010 NCAA Championships, but after a tough-fought battle on the boards, the sophomore finished with a score of 431.00.
The 2011 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships conclude on Saturday, with McCrory looking to defend his 2010 National Title on the platform.
