COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The fourth-ranked Duke women's tennis team rolled past No. 24 Maryland 6-1, on Sunday afternoon to pick up its seventh straight win.
During the current seven match win streak – six of which have been on the road - the Blue Devils have yet to drop the doubles point and have posted a 34-8 singles record. Duke has defeated three nationally ranked opponents over the seven matches and remains undefeated on the road at 7-0.
"All in all we played a good match today,” said women's head coach Jamie Ashworth. “I was really happy with the energy we had in doubles. Maryland has had some good doubles results and I am glad we were the better team from an energy standpoint. We did a great job capitalizing on winning the doubles point by winning five first sets fairly easily. We are getting better and its great to see that at this time of year. The next three weeks are huge for us and we need to all be at the tops of our games"
Duke (15-2, 4-0 ACC) opened the match winning two out of three doubles contests. The No. 64 duo of Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny won the first of two doubles matches with an 8-4 decision on court two, after Cristina Sanchez-Quintar and Jordaan Sanford took down Ellah Nze and Rachel Kahan 8-3 at the number one spot.
Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar sealed the doubles point and a early 1-0 lead for Duke on court two. Fahoum and Mar took down Ana Belzunce and Welma Luus 8-5, as the pair improves to 5-4 overall in doubles this season.
Kahan was the first off the courts for Duke in singles with her 17th straight win over Julia Huschke to remain undefeated at 15-0 in singles dual matches. Next to finish was Elizabeth Plotkin on court four with a straight set decision over Luus 6-1, 6-3.
Maryland bounced back from dropping two straight singles matches with a win from Sanchez-Quintar over Fahoum on court one. Sanchez-Quintar remains undefeated this season and has now defeated three straight ranked opponents.
Duke followed the loss with a match-clinching win on court six from Clayton. Clayton sealed the win for the Blue Devils with a 6-0, 6-4, straight set decision over Jordan Hansbrough that extended her match win streak to seven.
With two matches remaining, the Blue Devils picked up the final two points of the match when Nze defeated Belzunce in three sets and Zsilinszka downed Sanford to give Duke the 6-1 win.
The Blue Devils will return home for the first time since March 2, when they host Virginia Tech and No. 17 Virginia on April 2 and 3.
