Duke Women Break School Record in First Day of ACCs

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - The 2012 Women's ACC Swimming & Diving Championships got underway Wednesday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center with the first two events of the conference championships - the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay.
The Duke women opened the meet in strong fashion, as freshman Megan McCarroll, sophomore Christine Wixted, senior Steffi Niessl and sophomore Lauren Weaver tied for fourth place in the 200 medley relay. The Blue Devils clocked 1:40.55 for a new program record while also surpassing the NCAA provisional standard in the event.
In the 800 free relay, senior Meghan Dwyer, sophomore Kelly Hagerty, freshman Katherine Plevka and junior Cara Vogel combined for a season-best time of 7:25.18 to take ninth overall. In addition, Hagerty (1:51.79), Plevka (1:52.35) and Vogel (1:50.31) all achieved lifetime bests in their respective splits.
The Blue Devils are currently in eighth place after the first two events with 47 total points. Virginia leads the field with 80 points after posting first-place finishes in both relay events, followed by North Carolina and NC State.
"We are very proud of everyone who performed tonight," said head coach Dan Colella. "The first event of the evening being a school record was a very exciting way to get things started ... We're very satisfied with the evening's results and we're looking forward to keeping it rolling tomorrow morning at prelims."
The action continues at 11 a.m. Thursday morning with the preliminaries of the 500 free, 200 IM and the 50 free, with evening finals in those events beginning at 7 p.m. The men's and women's diving events also get underway Thursday, with the prelims of the women's 1-meter events slated for 1 p.m., followed by the finals at 5 p.m. The finals of the 3-meter men's competition will be held during the evening session.
