DURHAM, N.C.—One week out from a strong showing at the Hokie Open to start the 2014-15 season the Duke wrestling team looks to continue to build on the opening performance Sunday, Nov. 16 at the Wolfpack Open. NC State will host the event at Carmichael Gymnasium on its campus.
Admission to the event is $15 and wrestling begins at 9 a.m. The Blue Devils, similar to the Hokie Open, will send its entire squad to the event to wrestle with some competing in Duke singlets and others squaring off against opponents unattached.
Redshirt seniors Immanuel Kerr-Brown and redshirt junior Marcus Cain are coming off of solid third-place showings at the Hokie Open at 157 and 149 pounds, respectively. Kerr-Brown, 3-1 after the opening tournament and ranked 20th nationally, will likely have a chance to wrestle NC State rival Tommy Gantt again after Kerr-Brown fell to him in the semifinal round at the Hokie Open.
Cain, who climbed into the national polls following his performance in Blacksburg, will continue to build his confidence at 149 after competing at 165 a year ago. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native wrestled his first two seasons at 149 before bumping up two divisions a year ago.
At 174 pounds, redshirt sophomore Brian Dorsey looks to find a spot on the podium again after taking third at the Hokie Open, while sophomore Jacob Kasper hopes to build on his fifth-place showing at 184 pounds. Kasper captured the most wins on the opening weekend in the large 184-pound division, going 6-1 overall with the lone loss to North Carolina's Alex Utley.
Evan Botwin, wrestling at 141 this season, took fourth to kick of his redshirt sophomore season and Jake Faust was sixth from 165 pounds. A collection of redshirt freshmen also return to the mats in Duke singlets, including Tyler Patrick who went 2-2 on his opening weekend.
Hoping to make his 2014-15 season debut will be redshirt senior Brandon Gambucci at 141 pounds. He is looking to return to the NCAA Championships after qualifying in 2013 at 133 pounds.
Redshirt junior Conner Hartmann will wrestle unattached after winning the Hokie Open at 197 pounds. He will be joined by a large group of freshmen who will be redshirting in 2014-15, including Grant Leeth who took fifth in the open division of the Hokie Open a week ago.
Duke opens its home slate the following week, hosting No. 7 Nebraska Nov. 22. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m., in Card Gymnasium.
