PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – Duke's doubles pair of senior Beatrice Capra and freshman Ellyse Hamlin saw its run in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships main draw come to an end Friday afternoon in Pacific Palisades, Calif., after suffering an 8-4 defeat against Georgia's 20th-ranked pair of Ellen Perez and Mariana Gould. Friday's loss is the first of the season for the Duke tandem, which owns a record of 8-1 in 2015.
Capra and Hamlin, the 39th-ranked doubles team in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) preseason poll, posted strong play to reach the quarterfinal round of the main doubles draw at this year's tournament. The Duke duo defeated three doubles teams, including the 38th-ranked pair of Maiar Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed of Fresno State, to reach the main draw of the competition. Once in the main draw, Capra and Hamlin upset back-to-back top-15 opponents in 11th-ranked Yuliya Lysa and Shannon Hudson of Arkansas and fifth-ranked Eva Paalma and Rachel Pierson of Texas A&M.
The Blue Devils return to competition Thursday, Oct. 22, traveling to Chapel Hill, N.C., for ITA Regional contests.
