ATLANTA – Duke redshirt senior Conner Hartmann turned in a dominant performance at the 50th annual NWCA All-Star Classic at McCamish Pavilion Sunday with an 8-1 victory over No. 5 Max Huntley of Michigan. Hartmann is the first Blue Devil wrestler to compete in the prestigious event.
“I agree with what they said on ESPN that he had the most dominant performance of the night,” said head coach Glen Lanham. “He just looks good. He was missing a couple key things last year, just some strength. He got that and he's ready to roll and make a run.”
The Hire Heroes NWCA All-Star Classic presented by the Wrestlers in Business Network also was used to test the experimental three-point takedown rule and also implemented the newest rules changes to collegiate wrestling.
Hartmann, ranked third in all of the preseason polls, dominated Huntley throughout the seven-minute match. The Port Orchard, Wash., native scored a takedown just over a minute into the first period for the 3-0 lead.
Huntley, a returning All-American, escaped moments later to make it 3-1, but Hartmann scored three crucial points in the final seconds of the session for the 6-1 lead.
“It was pretty much a flat line [after getting that early takedown],” said Hartmann. “I was wrestling and I got the takedown, but I knew I needed a lot more, especially with this three-point rule. Just because I had a takedown it didn't mean the match was put away. That's what I was thinking.”
A two-time All-American and hoping to become Duke's first three-time All-American, Hartmann escaped to start the second to increase his 7-1 lead and never looked back. He was outstanding in the third period, riding Huntley throughout the two minutes for the bonus point and the 8-1 decision.
The Blue Devils open the 2015-16 as a team Nov. 8 at the annual Hokie Open.
